Prefers coastal areas with rocky reefs, seagrass beds (Posidonia oceanica), sandy bottoms, and estuaries. Often found near structures like jetties, breakwaters, and submerged rocks. Juveniles frequently form schools in very shallow, protected areas.

Eastern Atlantic Ocean, from the Bay of Biscay south to South Africa, including the Canary Islands, Cape Verde, and Madeira. Also widely distributed throughout the Mediterranean Sea and the Black Sea.
