Descrição

Cynoscion nebulosus, commonly known as the Spotted Seatrout or Corvina pinta, is a popular estuarine and coastal marine fish belonging to the family Sciaenidae (drums and croakers). It is highly prized by recreational anglers and commercially important throughout its range. This species is characterized by its elongated, somewhat compressed body, silvery coloration, and distinctive black spots scattered across its back and fins. It is a predatory fish, primarily feeding on smaller fish and crustaceans, and plays a significant ecological role in the estuarine food web.

Dicas de identificação

Spots

Look for numerous distinct black spots on the upper body, dorsal fin, and caudal fin. This is the most reliable distinguishing feature from other Cynoscion species.

Teeth

Examine the mouth for two prominent canine-like teeth at the front of the upper jaw. This helps differentiate it from other sciaenids.

Lateral Line

Note that the lateral line extends all the way to the tip of the caudal fin, a characteristic of the genus Cynoscion.

Body Shape

Observe the elongated, somewhat slender body, typical of a swift predator.

Habitat

Tipo de água

Profundidade
Typically found in shallow waters, from less than 1 meter to about 10 meters (3-33 feet), though occasionally deeper.
Ambiente
Estuaries, coastal bays, lagoons, and nearshore coastal waters. Prefers seagrass beds, oyster reefs, and other structured habitats that provide cover and foraging opportunities. Tolerates a wide range of salinities, from nearly freshwater to full oceanic salinity.
Distribuição geográfica
Western Atlantic Ocean, from Cape Cod, Massachusetts, south along the U.S. coast, throughout the Gulf of Mexico, and along the coast of Mexico to the Yucatán Peninsula.

Fatos principais

Drumming Soundbehavior

Like other members of the Sciaenidae family, male Spotted Seatrout produce a drumming sound during spawning by vibrating specialized muscles against their swim bladder. This sound is used to attract females.

Top Estuarine Predatorbehavior

Spotted Seatrout are apex predators in many estuarine systems, playing a crucial role in controlling populations of smaller fish and invertebrates, thus maintaining ecosystem balance.

Longevityinteresting

While most individuals caught are relatively young, Spotted Seatrout can live up to 10-12 years, with growth rates varying significantly based on environmental conditions and food availability.

Habitat Dependencyinteresting

Their strong reliance on healthy seagrass beds and oyster reefs makes them excellent indicator species for the overall health of estuarine ecosystems.

Informações de segurança

Seguro
  • Nível de segurança: safe
  • Venenoso: Não
  • Comestibilidade: edible
  • Observações de manuseio: No specific handling precautions are required beyond standard fish handling practices to avoid fin spines. The teeth are small but can cause minor abrasions if not handled carefully.

Espécies similares

Silver Seatrout

Cynoscion nothus

Lacks the distinct black spots of the Spotted Seatrout. Generally smaller and more uniformly silvery.

Sand Seatrout

Cynoscion arenarius

Possesses faint, irregular spots or blotches, but these are much less distinct and numerous than those of the Spotted Seatrout. The Sand Seatrout also has a more pointed snout and a slightly different fin ray count.

Weakfish

Cynoscion regalis

Has small, irregular spots that are less defined and often form wavy lines rather than distinct spots. The Weakfish typically has a more yellowish tint on its fins and a more compressed body.
