Descrição

Crossocheilus siamensis, commonly known as the Siamese Algae Eater (SAE), is a freshwater cyprinid fish native to Southeast Asia. It is highly valued in the aquarium trade for its exceptional ability to consume various types of algae, including problematic red algae (brush algae and black beard algae) that many other herbivorous fish avoid. This species is characterized by its elongated body, a distinctive black horizontal stripe running from the snout to the caudal fin, and the absence of barbels (or very small, inconspicuous ones) at the corners of its mouth, which helps differentiate it from similar species.

Características físicas

Formato do corpo
elongated
Coloração
The body is typically a silvery-brown to olive-brown dorsally, fading to a lighter, often whitish, ventral surface. The most prominent feature is a distinct, jagged-edged black horizontal stripe that extends from the tip of the snout, through the eye, along the lateral line, and into the caudal fin. The fins are generally translucent or slightly yellowish, lacking any prominent coloration or markings.

Posição da boca

Características distintivas
A prominent, jagged-edged black horizontal stripe extending from snout to caudal fin., Absence of barbels, or very small, inconspicuous barbels at the corners of the mouth., Pectoral fins are held flat against the substrate when resting, unlike the slightly elevated posture of some similar species., Can change the intensity of their black stripe, making it fade when stressed or resting.
Nadadeira dorsal
Single dorsal fin, typically with 8-9 branched rays.
Nadadeira caudal
Forked caudal fin, with the black stripe extending into both lobes.
Nadadeira peitoral
Paired pectoral fins, typically held flat against surfaces.
Nadadeiras características
All fins are generally clear or slightly yellowish, lacking the distinct black and yellow markings seen in some similar species like the Flying Fox (Epalzeorhynchos kalopterus).

Dicas de identificação

Black Stripe

The black horizontal stripe is the most reliable identifier. In C. siamensis, this stripe is typically jagged or irregular along its edges and extends fully into the caudal fin. In contrast, the False Flying Fox (Garra cambodgiensis) has a smoother-edged stripe that often fades before reaching the caudal fin, and the true Flying Fox (Epalzeorhynchos kalopterus) has a smooth-edged stripe that does not extend into the caudal fin, and its fins are often edged in black and yellow.

Barbels

C. siamensis either lacks barbels or has a single pair of very small, inconspicuous barbels at the corners of its mouth. True Flying Foxes (Epalzeorhynchos kalopterus) have two pairs of prominent barbels, and False Flying Foxes (Garra cambodgiensis) typically have one pair of more noticeable barbels than C. siamensis.

Resting Posture

When resting, C. siamensis often props itself up on its pectoral fins, which are held flat against the substrate. Other similar species may hold their pectoral fins slightly elevated.

Swimming Behavior

Siamese Algae Eaters tend to 'graze' along surfaces, often resting on leaves or rocks. They are generally more active swimmers than some similar species.

Habitat

Tipo de água
freshwater
Profundidade
Typically found in shallow to moderately deep waters, often near the bottom or mid-water column.
Ambiente
Native to fast-flowing rivers and streams with rocky or sandy substrates, often with abundant submerged vegetation and driftwood. They prefer well-oxygenated water.
Distribuição geográfica
Native to Southeast Asia, specifically the Chao Phraya and Mekong river basins in Thailand, Laos, Cambodia, and Vietnam. Also found in parts of the Malay Peninsula.

Informações sobre aquário

  • Nível de cuidado: beginner
  • Temperamento: peaceful
  • Alimentação: herbivore
  • Tamanho mínimo do aquário: 75 gallons (280 liters) for a group, 30 gallons (115 liters) for a single specimen
  • Temperatura: 24-26 °C (75-79 °F)
  • Nível de pH: 6.5-7.5
  • Dureza da água: 5-15 dGH
  • Compatibilidade: Generally peaceful and can be kept with most community fish that are not overly aggressive or large enough to consume them. Best kept in groups of 5 or more to reduce territoriality among themselves.
  • Requisitos especiais: Requires a well-oxygenated tank with good water flow. Provide plenty of hiding spots among driftwood, rocks, and plants. A secure lid is essential as they are known jumpers. While they are excellent algae eaters, their diet should be supplemented with high-quality vegetable flakes, algae wafers, blanched vegetables (e.g., zucchini, cucumber, spinach), and occasional live or frozen foods like bloodworms or brine shrimp.

Informações no ambiente natural

  • Estado de conservação: least concern
  • Sazonalidade: Breeding typically occurs during the rainy season in their natural habitat, but specific seasonal patterns for wild populations are not extensively documented for commercial purposes.
  • Preço de mercado: Low to medium, depending on size and region.
  • Importância comercial: medium
  • Sabor: Not typically consumed due to small size and bony nature.
  • Textura: Not typically consumed.
  • Valor nutricional: Not typically consumed.

Fatos principais

Algae Eating Prowessinteresting

Crossocheilus siamensis is one of the few fish species known to effectively consume red algae, including stubborn black beard algae (BBA) and brush algae, making it highly sought after by aquarists.

Misidentification Commoninteresting

Due to similar appearances, C. siamensis is frequently misidentified and sold as 'Flying Fox' or 'False Flying Fox', leading to confusion among aquarists. Careful observation of barbels and stripe extension is crucial for correct identification.

Social Behaviorbehavior

While often sold individually, Siamese Algae Eaters are more comfortable and exhibit more natural behaviors when kept in groups of 5 or more. In smaller groups or when solitary, they can become more territorial or shy.

Dietary Shiftbehavior

As C. siamensis matures, its preference for algae may decrease, and it might start consuming more prepared foods or even some softer plant leaves if not adequately fed. Supplementing their diet is important to ensure they remain effective algae eaters.

Informações de segurança

Seguro
  • Nível de segurança: safe
  • Venenoso: Não
  • Comestibilidade: not recommended
  • Observações de manuseio: No specific handling precautions are required beyond standard fish handling practices to minimize stress. They are not known to bite or possess any harmful spines.

Flying Fox

Epalzeorhynchos kalopterus

Has two pairs of prominent barbels, a smooth-edged black stripe that does NOT extend into the caudal fin, and fins often edged in black and yellow. Its body is typically more robust and less elongated than C. siamensis.

False Flying Fox

Garra cambodgiensis

Has one pair of more noticeable barbels than C. siamensis, and its black stripe is typically smoother-edged and often fades before reaching the caudal fin. It also possesses a distinct suctorial disc on its chin, which C. siamensis lacks.

Chinese Algae Eater

Gyrinocheilus aymonieri

Has a distinct suctorial mouth for clinging to surfaces, a more mottled or blotchy coloration, and lacks the prominent black lateral stripe of C. siamensis. Can become aggressive as it matures.
