Cosmopolitan in temperate and tropical waters of the Atlantic, Indian, and Pacific Oceans. In the Atlantic, it ranges from Norway and Iceland south to South Africa, including the Mediterranean Sea. In the Pacific, it is found from Alaska to Chile and across to Japan and Australia. In the Indian Ocean, it is widespread.
