Beschrijving

Neocaridina davidi, commonly known as the Cherry Shrimp, is a small, freshwater invertebrate belonging to the Atyidae family. It is a highly popular species in the aquarium hobby due to its vibrant coloration, ease of care, and prolific breeding. Originating from Taiwan, this species has been selectively bred to enhance its red pigmentation, leading to various color grades. They are primarily detritivores and grazers, playing an ecological role in consuming algae and decaying organic matter.

Identificatietips

Size

Adults typically reach 2-3 cm (0.8-1.2 inches) in total length.

Coloration

Distinguished by their vibrant red coloration in selectively bred varieties. Wild types are more subdued, translucent to brownish-green.

Rostrum

The rostrum (forward projection from the carapace) is relatively short and bears teeth on both dorsal and ventral margins.

Sexual Dimorphism

Females are generally larger, more robust, and exhibit more intense coloration than males. They also develop a 'saddle' (undeveloped eggs) behind their head before breeding and carry eggs under their abdomen.

Habitat

Watertype
freshwater
Diepte
Typically found in shallow, slow-moving waters.
Omgeving
Inhabits freshwater streams, ponds, and rice paddies with abundant aquatic vegetation, leaf litter, and submerged structures. Prefers areas with stable water parameters and good water quality.
Geografisch verspreidingsgebied
Native to Taiwan and parts of mainland China. Introduced to various regions globally through the aquarium trade.

  • Speciale vereisten: Requires stable water parameters, a well-cycled aquarium, and plenty of hiding places (e.g., live plants, moss, driftwood). Copper is highly toxic to shrimp, so avoid medications containing copper.

Informatie uit het wild

  • Beschermingsstatus: least concern
  • Seizoensgebondenheid: Breeds year-round in suitable conditions, with no specific seasonal patterns in captivity. Wild populations may exhibit seasonal breeding influenced by environmental factors.

Belangrijke feiten

Prolific Breedersbehavior

Cherry shrimp are known for their rapid breeding, with females capable of producing clutches of 20-50 eggs every 4-6 weeks under optimal conditions.

Algae Eatersbehavior

They are excellent algae eaters, helping to keep aquariums clean by grazing on various types of algae and biofilm.

Color Gradinginteresting

The intensity of their red coloration is often graded, with 'Cherry' being the lowest grade of red and 'Bloody Mary' or 'Fire Red' representing the highest, most opaque red.

Copper Sensitivityamazing

Cherry shrimp, like all invertebrates, are extremely sensitive to copper, which is a common ingredient in many fish medications. Even trace amounts can be lethal.

Sexual Dimorphismbehavior

Female cherry shrimp are typically larger and more vibrantly colored than males, and they develop a 'saddle' (undeveloped eggs) behind their head before breeding.

Veiligheidsinformatie

Veilig
  • Veiligheidsniveau: safe
  • Giftig: Nee
  • Eetbaarheid: not recommended
  • Hanteringsnotities: Cherry shrimp are delicate and should be handled with care. Avoid sudden changes in water parameters. When transferring, use a soft net or cup to minimize stress. Do not expose to copper-based medications.

Vergelijkbare soorten

Amano Shrimp

Caridina multidentata

Amano shrimp are larger (up to 5 cm), typically translucent with a pattern of dots or dashes along their sides, and require brackish water for larval development, making them harder to breed in captivity than Neocaridina davidi.

Tiger Shrimp

Caridina mariae

Tiger shrimp are typically smaller than Amano shrimp, often have distinct black or blue stripes on a lighter body, and have different water parameter preferences (often softer, more acidic water) compared to Neocaridina davidi.

Ghost Shrimp

Palaemonetes paludosus

Ghost shrimp are almost entirely transparent, larger than Neocaridina davidi, and often have a more elongated rostrum. They are also generally less colorful.
