Atpažinimo patarimai
Body Shape and Jaws
The most striking feature is its extremely long, slender, almost cylindrical body and the distinctive, elongated, beak-like jaws. The lower jaw is typically longer than the upper jaw in adults.
Fin Placement
Observe the dorsal and anal fins, which are positioned very far back on the body, almost opposite each other, close to the caudal fin.
Coloration
Look for the dark blue to greenish-blue back, silvery sides, and white belly. A prominent silvery lateral line is usually visible.
Green Bones
If caught, the presence of green bones (especially after cooking) is a definitive characteristic of Belone belone, though this is not an external identification feature.

- Specialūs reikalavimai: Requires extremely large, open tanks with strong filtration and water movement. Highly prone to injury from striking tank walls due to its speed and tendency to jump. Specialized feeding of live or fresh whole fish is necessary. Not recommended for private aquarists.

Pagrindiniai faktai
Green Bonesinteresting
The Garfish is famous for its distinctive green bones, a harmless pigmentation caused by biliverdin. This often surprises people when they cook the fish.
Surface Hunterbehavior
Belone belone is a highly visual predator that primarily hunts near the surface of the water, often leaping out of the water when pursuing prey or escaping predators.
Migratory Patternsbehavior
Garfish undertake seasonal migrations, moving into shallower coastal waters to spawn in spring and summer, and retreating to deeper, offshore waters during colder months.
Angler's Delightinteresting
Despite their bony nature, Garfish are a popular target for recreational anglers due to their fighting spirit and acrobatic jumps when hooked.
Saugos informacija
Elkitės atsargiai- Saugumo lygis: caution
- Nuodinga: Ne
- Tinkamumas maistui: edible
- Elgesio su žuvimi pastabos: Garfish are not venomous, but their sharp teeth can inflict painful bites if handled carelessly. Their thrashing can also cause injury due to their pointed jaws. Use caution when unhooking or handling. They are known to jump out of the water, especially when startled or pursuing prey, which can pose a minor risk to boaters.

Atlantic Needlefish
Strongylura marina
While also having an elongated body and needle-like jaws, Strongylura marina typically has a more pronounced dorsal fin and often inhabits brackish and freshwater environments more frequently than Belone belone. Its geographic range is primarily the Western Atlantic.
Houndfish
Tylosurus crocodilus
Houndfish are generally much larger and more robust than Belone belone, with a more powerful, crocodile-like jaw structure. They are typically found in warmer, tropical and subtropical waters globally.
Sauries (e.g., Scomberesox saurus)
Scomberesox saurus
Sauries also have elongated bodies and pointed snouts, but their jaws are not as extremely elongated and beak-like as Belone belone. They also possess a series of finlets behind the dorsal and anal fins, which are absent in Belone belone.
