Descrizione

Trigla lyra, commonly known as the Piper Gurnard or Pesce Cuculo, is a distinctive species of marine ray-finned fish belonging to the family Triglidae, the sea robins and gurnards. It is characterized by its large head, prominent bony plates, and elongated, tapering body. The species is notable for its vibrant coloration and the presence of free, finger-like pectoral fin rays used for sensing and foraging on the seabed. Its common name 'cuculo' (cuckoo) in Italian is thought to derive from the croaking sounds it can produce.

Forma del corpo
elongated
Colorazione
Dorsal surface typically reddish-pink to orange-red, often with darker blotches or bands. Ventral surface is paler, whitish. Pectoral fins are large and fan-like, often with iridescent blue or green spots and a dark margin, particularly striking when spread. The first dorsal fin has a prominent black spot.

Caratteristiche distintive
Very large, bony head with a steep profile and numerous ridges and spines., Two separate dorsal fins., Three free, finger-like rays at the bottom of each pectoral fin, used for 'walking' on the seabed and sensing prey., Large, fan-like pectoral fins, often brightly colored., Elongated, tapering body towards the caudal fin.
Pinna dorsale
Two dorsal fins: the first with 9-10 spines, the second with 16-18 soft rays. The first dorsal fin is notably higher than the second.
Pinna caudale
Truncate to slightly emarginate caudal fin.
Pinna pettorale
Large, fan-like pectoral fins with 10-11 rays, plus three detached, thickened, and mobile rays below.
Pinne distintive
Pelvic fins are thoracic, with one spine and five soft rays. Anal fin has 15-18 soft rays.

Consigli per l'identificazione

Head Shape

Look for the exceptionally large, bony head with a steep, almost vertical profile and prominent ridges and spines. This is a key differentiator from other gurnard species.

Pectoral Fins

Observe the large, fan-like pectoral fins, often with iridescent blue or green spots and a dark margin. Crucially, note the three free, finger-like rays at the base of each pectoral fin, which are used for locomotion and sensing.

Coloration

The reddish-pink to orange-red dorsal coloration, contrasting with a paler belly, is characteristic. The prominent black spot on the first dorsal fin is also a good indicator.

Body Taper

The body tapers significantly towards the tail, giving it an elongated appearance.

Habitat

Tipo di acqua
saltwater
Profondità
Typically found on sandy or muddy bottoms at depths ranging from 50 to 700 meters (160 to 2,300 feet), though more commonly between 100 and 400 meters.
Ambiente
Benthic, demersal. Prefers soft substrates where it can forage for invertebrates and small fish. Often found on continental shelves and slopes.
Areale geografico
Eastern Atlantic Ocean, from the British Isles south to Mauritania, including the Mediterranean Sea and the Black Sea. Also reported from the Azores and Madeira.

Fatti chiave

Walking Fishbehavior

Trigla lyra uses its three free, finger-like pectoral fin rays to 'walk' along the seabed, probing the substrate for food. This unique adaptation allows it to effectively search for buried prey.

Sound Productioninteresting

Like other gurnards, Trigla lyra can produce distinct 'grunting' or 'croaking' sounds, particularly when disturbed or during spawning. These sounds are generated by vibrating muscles against the swim bladder.

Sensory Finsamazing

The free pectoral fin rays are highly sensitive and equipped with chemoreceptors and mechanoreceptors, allowing the fish to detect prey by touch and taste in the murky seabed environment.

Deep-Sea Dwellerinteresting

While often caught in shallower waters, Trigla lyra is known to inhabit significant depths, sometimes exceeding 700 meters, showcasing its adaptability to various benthic environments.

Informazioni di sicurezza

Maneggiare con cura
  • Livello di sicurezza: caution
  • Velenoso: Sì
  • Commestibilità: edible
  • Note sul maneggio: Trigla lyra possesses sharp spines on its head and dorsal fins. While not typically considered highly dangerous, these spines can inflict painful punctures. The dorsal fin spines are known to be mildly venomous, causing localized pain, swelling, and redness. Handle with care, preferably using thick gloves or a towel, and avoid direct contact with the spines. If stung, clean the wound thoroughly and apply heat (e.g., hot water) to denature the protein-based venom, and seek medical attention if symptoms persist or worsen.

Specie simili

Red Gurnard

Chelidonichthys cuculus

The Red Gurnard has a less pronounced and less spiny head, and its pectoral fins are typically uniformly red or orange without the prominent blue/green spots or dark margin seen in Trigla lyra. Its body is also generally more robust.

Grey Gurnard

Eutrigla gurnardus

The Grey Gurnard has a more subdued greyish-brown coloration, a less spiny head, and lacks the vibrant pectoral fin markings of Trigla lyra. Its body is also more slender.

Tub Gurnard

Chelidonichthys lucerna

The Tub Gurnard has a blunter snout and typically a more yellowish or brownish coloration. While it also has large pectoral fins, they usually feature a prominent blue spot with a white margin, but lack the extensive iridescent markings of Trigla lyra. Its head is also less spiny.
