The Whitetip Reef Shark (Triaenodon obesus) is a species of requiem shark, family Carcharhinidae, and the only member of the genus Triaenodon. It is a small, slender shark, easily identifiable by the white tips on its first dorsal fin and upper caudal fin lobe. This species is a common inhabitant of coral reefs throughout the Indo-Pacific, known for its nocturnal hunting habits and ability to rest motionless on the seabed or in caves.
Caratteristiche fisiche

- Pinna caudale
- Caudal fin is asymmetrical, with a well-developed upper lobe featuring a white tip and a smaller lower lobe.
- Pinna pettorale
- Pectoral fins are broad and somewhat triangular.
- Pinne distintive
- The most distinctive feature is the prominent white tip on the first dorsal fin and the upper lobe of the caudal fin, which is present even in juveniles.
Consigli per l'identificazione
White fin tips
Look for the prominent white tips on the first dorsal fin and the upper lobe of the caudal fin. This is the most reliable distinguishing feature.
Body shape and size
Relatively small and slender shark, typically reaching 1.6 meters (5.2 feet) in length, with a maximum recorded length of 2.1 meters (6.9 feet).
Snout and eyes
Possesses a short, broad snout and oval eyes with vertical pupils, giving it a somewhat cat-like appearance.
Behavior
Often seen resting motionless on the bottom or in caves during the day, becoming active at night to hunt.
Habitat
- Tipo di acqua
- saltwater
- Profondità
- Typically found in shallow waters from 1 to 40 meters (3 to 130 feet), but can occur down to 330 meters (1,080 feet).
- Ambiente
- Primarily associated with coral reefs, including lagoons, reef flats, and seaward reefs. Often found resting in caves or under ledges during the day.
- Areale geografico
- Widespread throughout the Indo-Pacific region, from South Africa to Central America, including the Red Sea, East Africa, Indian Ocean islands, Southeast Asia, Australia, and numerous Pacific islands.
Informazioni sull'acquario
- Livello di cura: expert
- Temperamento: semi-aggressive
- Dieta: carnivore
- Dimensione minima della vasca: Not suitable for home aquariums; requires extremely large public aquariums (tens of thousands of gallons) due to size and activity level.
- Temperatura: 24-28°C (75-82°F)
- Livello di pH: 8.1-8.4
- Durezza: 8-12 dKH
- Compatibilità: Only compatible with very large, robust fish species that cannot be preyed upon. Not suitable for typical community tanks.
- Requisiti speciali: Requires immense space, pristine water quality, specialized filtration, and a diet of whole fish and crustaceans. Not recommended for private aquarists.
Informazioni in natura
- Stato di conservazione: vulnerable
- Stagionalità: Present year-round in its tropical range; no distinct seasonal migrations for breeding or feeding are widely documented, though local movements may occur.
- Prezzo di mercato: Low to moderate (primarily for fins and meat in some regions)
- Importanza commerciale: low
- Sapore: Mild, firm white meat
- Consistenza: Firm, flaky
- Metodi di cottura: Grilled, Fried, Baked, Steamed
- Valore nutrizionale: Good source of protein, low in fat. However, consumption is often discouraged due to conservation concerns and potential for mercury accumulation.
Fatti chiave
Nocturnal Hunterbehavior
Unlike many other reef sharks, the Whitetip Reef Shark is primarily nocturnal, hunting in groups at night for bony fish, crustaceans, and octopuses.
Resting Behaviorbehavior
It is one of the few shark species that can pump water over its gills while stationary, allowing it to rest motionless on the seabed or in caves without needing to swim to breathe.
Homebody Sharkbehavior
Whitetip Reef Sharks exhibit strong site fidelity, often remaining within a specific reef area for extended periods and returning to the same resting spots day after day.
Unique Teethevolution
Its small, pointed, and serrated teeth are perfectly adapted for grasping and holding onto the slippery, reef-dwelling prey it hunts.
Viviparous Reproductionbehavior
This species is viviparous, meaning the embryos develop inside the mother and are nourished by a placental connection, giving birth to live young.
Informazioni di sicurezza
Maneggiare con cura- Livello di sicurezza: caution
- Velenoso: No
- Commestibilità: not recommended
- Note sul maneggio: Whitetip Reef Sharks are generally not considered aggressive towards humans, especially during the day when they are resting. However, they are wild animals and can bite if provoked, cornered, or if food is present. Divers should maintain a respectful distance and avoid feeding them. Bites are rare and usually result from accidental encounters or provocation.
Specie simili
Grey Reef Shark
Carcharhinus amblyrhynchos
Lacks the distinct white tips on the dorsal and caudal fins. Generally larger and more robust, with a more pointed snout. Often has a dark trailing edge on the caudal fin.
Blacktip Reef Shark
Carcharhinus melanopterus
Characterized by prominent black tips on all fins, especially the first dorsal and caudal fins, often with a white margin. Typically smaller than the Whitetip Reef Shark and prefers shallower water.
Silvertip Shark
Carcharhinus albimarginatus
Has distinct white margins (not just tips) on all fins, particularly noticeable on the pectoral and dorsal fins. Generally a larger and more oceanic species, though it can be found near reefs.
