Descrizione

Thalassoma pavo, commonly known as the Peacock Wrasse, is a vibrant and active wrasse species found in the Mediterranean Sea and parts of the Eastern Atlantic. It is characterized by its striking coloration, which varies significantly between sexes and life stages, making it a fascinating subject for observation. This species plays an important ecological role in its benthic community as a diurnal predator of small invertebrates.

Caratteristiche fisiche

Forma del corpo
elongated
Colorazione
Highly variable. Initial phase (females and juveniles) typically green to brownish-green with five to seven vertical blue bars on the flanks, a dark spot on the dorsal fin, and a prominent black spot on the upper caudal fin base. Terminal phase males are much more vibrant, displaying iridescent blue-green bodies with a prominent red-orange vertical band behind the pectoral fin, a blue head with intricate red-orange reticulations, and elongated caudal fin rays. Both phases have a small, pointed head and a continuous dorsal fin.
Tipo di squame
cycloid
Posizione della bocca
terminal
Caratteristiche distintive
Sexual dichromatism (distinct color differences between sexes), Prominent black spot on the upper caudal fin base (initial phase), Red-orange vertical band behind pectoral fin (terminal phase male), Elongated caudal fin rays (terminal phase male), Small, protractile mouth with conical teeth
Pinna dorsale
Continuous, with 8 spines and 12-14 soft rays. The spinous portion is slightly lower than the soft-rayed portion.
Pinna caudale
Truncate to slightly emarginate in initial phase, becoming lunate with elongated outer rays in terminal phase males.
Pinna pettorale
Large and fan-shaped, with 13-15 rays.
Pinne distintive
Pelvic fins are relatively small and located thoracically. Anal fin has 3 spines and 10-12 soft rays.

Consigli per l'identificazione

Coloration (Initial Phase)

Look for a greenish-brown body with 5-7 faint blue vertical bars, a dark spot on the dorsal fin, and a distinct black spot at the base of the caudal fin. This is typical for females and juveniles.

Coloration (Terminal Phase Male)

Identify by the vibrant blue-green body, a prominent red-orange vertical band behind the pectoral fin, and intricate red-orange markings on the blue head. The caudal fin will also be more elongated.

Body Shape

Elongated, torpedo-shaped body, typical of wrasses, allowing for swift movement through water.

Mouth and Teeth

Small, protractile mouth with conical teeth, adapted for picking small invertebrates from surfaces.

Habitat

Tipo di acqua
saltwater
Profondità
Typically found from 1 to 50 meters (3 to 164 feet), occasionally deeper.
Ambiente
Prefers rocky reefs, seagrass beds (Posidonia oceanica), and areas with mixed sand and rubble. Often found near sheltered coastal areas, harbors, and jetties. Juveniles are frequently observed in shallower, more protected waters.
Areale geografico
Mediterranean Sea, including the Black Sea (rarely). Eastern Atlantic Ocean, from Portugal south to Senegal, including the Canary Islands, Madeira, and the Azores.

Fatti chiave

Protogynous Hermaphroditebehavior

Thalassoma pavo is a protogynous hermaphrodite, meaning all individuals are born female (initial phase) and can later change sex to become male (terminal phase). This sex change is often triggered by social cues, such as the absence of a dominant male.

Diurnal Foragerbehavior

This species is highly active during the day, constantly foraging for small invertebrates among rocks and seagrass. At night, it buries itself in the sand to sleep, protecting itself from nocturnal predators.

Cleaning Behaviorbehavior

Juvenile Peacock Wrasses have been observed engaging in cleaning behavior, removing parasites from larger fish, although this is not as pronounced as in dedicated cleaner wrasse species.

Rapid Color Changebehavior

Peacock Wrasses can exhibit rapid color changes, intensifying or dulling their hues depending on their mood, stress levels, or during courtship displays.

Ecological Indicatorinteresting

Due to its prevalence and sensitivity to habitat changes, the Peacock Wrasse can serve as an indicator species for the health of Mediterranean coastal ecosystems.

Specie simili

Mediterranean Rainbow Wrasse

Coris julis

While also sexually dimorphic and colorful, Coris julis typically has a more elongated body, a prominent zigzag lateral line, and a distinct orange-red stripe along the flank in terminal males, which is absent in Thalassoma pavo. The caudal fin of C. julis males is also more deeply forked.

Five-spotted Wrasse

Symphodus roissali

Symphodus roissali has a more compressed body and generally lacks the vibrant blue and red coloration of Thalassoma pavo. It typically has five distinct dark spots along its lateral line and a more rounded caudal fin.
