Consigli per l'identificazione

Body Shape and Coloration

Look for the elongated, lizard-like body and cryptic sandy-brown coloration with irregular darker blotches. This helps it blend with the seafloor.

Head and Mouth

Note the large, flattened head and the very wide mouth extending beyond the eye, armed with numerous sharp teeth. The eyes are positioned dorsally.

Adipose Fin

The presence of a small, fleshy adipose fin between the dorsal and caudal fins is a key characteristic of the family Synodontidae.

Pelvic Fins

Observe the large pelvic fins located anterior to the pectoral fins, with the inner rays longer than the outer ones, used for propping itself on the substrate.

Habitat

Tipo di acqua
saltwater
Profondità
Typically found from the surface down to about 400 meters (1,300 feet), but most commonly observed in shallower coastal waters, usually less than 100 meters.
Ambiente
Demersal, inhabiting sandy or muddy bottoms, seagrass beds, and rocky reefs. They prefer areas with good cover for ambush predation.
Areale geografico
Widespread in the Atlantic Ocean, including the Mediterranean Sea, the eastern Atlantic from Portugal to Angola, and the western Atlantic from Bermuda and North Carolina south to Brazil, including the Gulf of Mexico and the Caribbean Sea.

Fatti chiave

Ambush Predatorbehavior

Synodus saurus is a classic ambush predator, often burying itself in sand or mud with only its eyes protruding, waiting for unsuspecting prey to swim by.

Lizard-like Appearanceinteresting

Its common name, 'Lizardfish,' comes from its elongated body and flattened head, which give it a reptilian appearance.

Voracious Appetitebehavior

Despite its relatively small size, the Atlantic Lizardfish is a highly efficient and voracious predator, consuming a wide variety of smaller fish and invertebrates.

Hermaphroditismamazing

Like many other lizardfish species, Synodus saurus is a synchronous hermaphrodite, meaning individuals possess both male and female reproductive organs simultaneously.

Informazioni di sicurezza

Maneggiare con cura
  • Livello di sicurezza: caution
  • Velenoso: No
  • Commestibilità: edible
  • Note sul maneggio: While not venomous, Synodus saurus possesses numerous sharp, needle-like teeth. Care should be taken when handling to avoid painful bites. Anglers should use pliers or a dehooker to remove hooks. They are known to thrash vigorously when caught, so caution is advised.

Specie simili

Greater Lizardfish

Synodus synodus

Synodus synodus typically has more distinct dark blotches or bars along its sides, often forming a more defined pattern. Its head is generally less flattened, and the mouth may not extend as far past the eye as in S. saurus. The number of lateral line scales and fin rays can also differ upon close examination.

Red Lizardfish

Synodus erythrinus

Synodus erythrinus often exhibits a reddish or pinkish hue, especially when alive, which is distinct from the sandy-brown of S. saurus. Its body tends to be more slender, and its markings are usually less pronounced or absent.

Shortfin Lizardfish

Synodus intermedius

Synodus intermedius generally has a more robust body and a shorter, broader snout. Its coloration can be similar, but often features more prominent dark spots or bars. Fin ray counts and scale counts are important for definitive identification.
