Descrizione

Symphysodon, commonly known as Discus, are cichlids native to the Amazon River basin in South America. Renowned for their vibrant coloration, distinctive disc-shaped bodies, and complex social behaviors, they are highly prized in the aquarium hobby. There are currently three recognized species within the genus: Symphysodon aequifasciatus (Green Discus), Symphysodon discus (Heckel Discus), and Symphysodon tarzoo (Blue Discus), with ongoing debate and research into further species and subspecies differentiation. Their unique parental care, where fry feed on a nutritious mucous secretion from the parents' skin, is a hallmark of the genus.

Caratteristiche fisiche

Forma del corpo
compressed
Colorazione
Extremely variable, ranging from shades of green, blue, brown, and red, often with intricate patterns of stripes, spots, and marbling. Wild forms typically exhibit more subdued, earthy tones with distinct vertical stress bars. Captive-bred strains have been selectively bred for a vast array of intense colors and patterns.
Tipo di squame
ctenoid
Posizione della bocca
terminal
Caratteristiche distintive
Laterally compressed, disc-shaped body, almost circular in profile., Small, pointed head with large eyes., Prominent dorsal and anal fins that extend almost the entire length of the body., Often display 9 vertical stress bars, which can appear or disappear depending on mood, health, and environment., Small, protractile mouth.
Pinna dorsale
Long, continuous, extending from just behind the head to the caudal peduncle, with 9-14 spines and 27-34 soft rays.
Pinna caudale
Fan-shaped, rounded to slightly truncate, with 14-16 rays.
Pinna pettorale
Small and rounded, positioned just behind the operculum.
Pinne distintive
Pelvic fins are elongated and filamentous, often used for balance and communication.

Consigli per l'identificazione

Body Shape

The most defining characteristic is their almost perfectly circular, laterally compressed body, which distinguishes them from most other cichlids.

Coloration and Patterns

Observe the base color, presence and intensity of vertical stress bars (typically 9), and any horizontal stripes or intricate patterns. These can vary significantly between species and captive strains.

Fin Structure

Note the long, continuous dorsal and anal fins, and the elongated, filamentous pelvic fins.

Eye Color

Eye color can sometimes be an indicator of health and genetic strain, often appearing red or orange in healthy specimens.

Mouth and Head

Their small, pointed head and small mouth are characteristic.

Habitat

Tipo di acqua
freshwater
Profondità
Typically found in shallow, slow-moving waters, often less than 2 meters deep.
Ambiente
Inhabit blackwater and clearwater tributaries, flooded forests, and oxbow lakes of the Amazon basin. They prefer areas with dense submerged vegetation, roots, and fallen branches, which provide shelter and foraging grounds. The water is typically soft, acidic, and stained with tannins from decaying organic matter.
Areale geografico
Amazon River basin in South America, including parts of Brazil, Peru, and Colombia. Specific species have distinct, though sometimes overlapping, distributions within this vast region.

Informazioni sull'acquario

  • Livello di cura: advanced
  • Temperamento: peaceful
  • Dieta: omnivore
  • Dimensione minima della vasca: 75 gallons (280 liters) for a group of 5-6 adults
  • Temperatura: 27-31°C (80-88°F)
  • Livello di pH: 5.5-7.0 (ideally 6.0-6.5)
  • Durezza: 1-4 dGH (soft water)
  • Compatibilità: Best kept in species-specific tanks or with very peaceful, similarly sized, and water-parameter-compatible tank mates such as small tetras (e.g., Cardinal Tetras), Corydoras catfish, and Loricariids (e.g., Otocinclus). Avoid aggressive or fin-nipping species.
  • Requisiti speciali: Discus require pristine water quality with regular large water changes (50% or more weekly), excellent filtration, and stable water parameters. They thrive in planted tanks with driftwood and subdued lighting, mimicking their natural blackwater habitats. A varied diet of high-quality flakes, pellets, frozen foods (bloodworms, brine shrimp, beef heart mix), and live foods is essential for their health and coloration. They are schooling fish and should be kept in groups of at least 5-6 individuals to reduce stress and encourage natural behavior.

Informazioni in natura

  • Stato di conservazione: least concern
  • Stagionalità: Breeding in the wild is often tied to the rainy season, which provides abundant food and suitable spawning sites. In captivity, they can breed year-round under optimal conditions.
  • Prezzo di mercato: Highly variable, from $50 to several hundred dollars per fish depending on species, strain, size, and coloration.
  • Importanza commerciale: high
  • Sapore: Not typically consumed by humans due to their small size and high value as ornamental fish.
  • Consistenza: Not applicable
  • Valore nutrizionale: Not applicable

Fatti chiave

Parental Slime Feedingbehavior

Discus parents secrete a nutritious mucous from their skin, which their fry feed on for the first few weeks of life. This unique form of parental care is crucial for the survival and growth of the young.

King of the Aquariuminteresting

Due to their striking beauty, graceful movements, and demanding care requirements, Discus are often referred to as the 'King of the Aquarium'.

Social Structurebehavior

Discus are highly social fish and thrive in groups. A hierarchical structure often develops within a group, with dominant individuals displaying more vibrant colors.

Water Quality Sensitivityinteresting

Discus are exceptionally sensitive to poor water quality and fluctuating parameters. Even small amounts of ammonia, nitrite, or nitrate can cause stress, disease, and death.

Color Variationamazing

Through selective breeding, aquarists have developed hundreds of captive strains with an astonishing array of colors and patterns, far exceeding the natural variations found in the wild.

Informazioni di sicurezza

Sicuro
  • Livello di sicurezza: safe
  • Velenoso: No
  • Commestibilità: not recommended
  • Note sul maneggio: Discus are delicate fish and should be handled with extreme care if removal from the water is necessary. Use a soft, fine-mesh net to minimize stress and prevent damage to their fins or slime coat. Avoid prolonged exposure to air. They are not venomous and pose no physical threat to humans.

Specie simili

Angelfish

Pterophyllum spp.

While also disc-shaped cichlids, Angelfish have a more triangular body profile, much longer and more pointed dorsal and anal fins, and typically lack the intense, varied coloration and distinct stress bars of Discus. Their mouths are also proportionally larger.

Uaru Cichlid

Uaru amphiacanthoides

Uaru cichlids also have a somewhat disc-shaped body but are generally more oval and less perfectly circular than Discus. They typically exhibit a more subdued coloration, often with a prominent black blotch on their flanks, and lack the intricate patterns and vibrant hues of Discus. Their mouths are also larger and more downturned.
