Consigli per l'identificazione

Size

Can reach lengths of over 2.5 meters (8.2 feet) and weights exceeding 100 kg (220 lbs), making it the largest freshwater fish in Europe. Record specimens have exceeded 5 meters and 300 kg.

Barbels

Two very long maxillary barbels extending past the pectoral fins, and four shorter mandibular barbels. This is a key distinguishing feature from other catfish species.

Dorsal Fin

Extremely small and positioned far forward on the body, almost vestigial compared to its massive size.

Anal Fin

Unusually long, extending from the middle of the body to the caudal fin, giving the fish an eel-like appearance.

Skin

Smooth, scaleless, and often mottled, distinguishing it from scaled fish and some other catfish species with rougher skin.

Habitat

Profondità
Prefers deeper, slow-moving or stagnant waters, but can be found in shallower areas, especially at night for feeding. Typically found from surface to several meters deep.
Ambiente
Large rivers, lakes, reservoirs, and sometimes brackish estuaries. Favors areas with dense vegetation, submerged structures, and muddy or silty bottoms for cover and ambush hunting. Tolerant of low oxygen levels.
Areale geografico
Native to Eastern Europe (e.g., Danube, Dnieper, Volga river basins), Western Asia (e.g., Aral Sea basin). Widely introduced across Western Europe (e.g., Rhine, Rhône, Po, Ebro rivers) and parts of Asia, often becoming an invasive species.

Fatti chiave

European Giantrecord

Silurus glanis is the largest freshwater fish in Europe, with individuals regularly exceeding 2 meters in length.

Apex Predatorbehavior

It is an opportunistic and voracious apex predator, consuming a wide variety of prey including fish, crustaceans, amphibians, small mammals, and even birds.

Nocturnal Hunterbehavior

Primarily nocturnal, Wels Catfish use their highly sensitive barbels and lateral line system to detect prey in murky waters and low light conditions.

Invasive Speciesinteresting

Due to its rapid growth, large size, and predatory nature, S. glanis has become an invasive species in many areas where it has been introduced, impacting native fish populations.

Long-Livedinteresting

Wels Catfish can live for a considerable time, with some individuals reaching ages of 30-50 years in the wild.

Parental Carebehavior

Males exhibit parental care, guarding the nest and fanning the eggs until they hatch.

Informazioni di sicurezza

Maneggiare con cura
  • Livello di sicurezza: caution
  • Velenoso: No
  • Commestibilità: edible
  • Note sul maneggio: While not venomous, large Wels Catfish can inflict serious injuries with their powerful jaws, numerous small, sharp teeth, and strong pectoral fin spines. Anglers should exercise extreme caution when handling, especially large specimens. Use thick gloves and appropriate tools for unhooking. Their slimy skin can make them difficult to grip. Always prioritize the safety of both the fish and the handler.
