Descrizione

Serranus cabrilla, commonly known as the Comber or Perchia, is a small to medium-sized marine fish belonging to the family Serranidae (sea basses and groupers). It is a hermaphroditic species, typically a protogynous hermaphrodite, meaning it functions as a female first and can later change sex to male, though simultaneous hermaphroditism is also observed. It is a benthic species, often found near rocky bottoms, seagrass beds, and sandy areas with cover. Its cryptic coloration allows it to blend effectively with its surroundings, aiding in both predation and evasion.

Consigli per l'identificazione

Body Shape and Coloration

Look for the elongated body, yellowish-brown to reddish-brown base color, and the characteristic 7-9 dark vertical bands on the flanks. Longitudinal lines and spots are also key.

Head and Mouth

Note the relatively large head and mouth, with a prominent lower jaw. The three spines on the operculum are a good identifying feature for the genus Serranus.

Dorsal Fin

The single, continuous dorsal fin with 10 spines and 13-16 soft rays is typical. The spiny portion is generally higher than the soft-rayed portion.

Size

Adults typically reach 20-30 cm in length, with a maximum recorded length of about 40 cm.

Habitat

Tipo di acqua
saltwater
Profondità
Typically found from 5 to 100 meters, occasionally deeper up to 500 meters. Juveniles are often found in shallower waters.
Ambiente
Prefers rocky bottoms, seagrass beds (Posidonia oceanica), sandy areas with scattered rocks or debris, and sometimes muddy bottoms. It is a demersal species, often found hiding in crevices or among vegetation.
Areale geografico
Eastern Atlantic Ocean from the British Isles (rarely) south to Senegal, including the Canary Islands, Madeira, and the Azores. Also widely distributed throughout the Mediterranean Sea and the Black Sea.

Fatti chiave

Hermaphroditismbehavior

Serranus cabrilla is a simultaneous hermaphrodite, meaning individuals possess both functional male and female reproductive organs at the same time. This allows them to alternate roles during spawning, increasing reproductive success.

Cryptic Camouflagebehavior

The Comber's highly variable coloration and intricate patterns allow it to blend seamlessly with its diverse benthic habitats, making it an effective ambush predator and difficult for predators to spot.

Territorial Naturebehavior

Despite its relatively small size, the Comber is territorial, especially during breeding season, and will defend its chosen hiding spots and foraging areas from conspecifics and other similar-sized fish.

Dietary Generalistbehavior

As an opportunistic carnivore, the Comber has a broad diet, consuming a variety of small crustaceans, mollusks, and smaller fish, demonstrating its adaptability to different food sources within its habitat.

Informazioni di sicurezza

Maneggiare con cura
  • Livello di sicurezza: caution
  • Velenoso: No
  • Commestibilità: edible
  • Note sul maneggio: While not venomous, Combers possess sharp dorsal fin spines and opercular spines that can inflict painful punctures. Handle with care to avoid injury. They are generally not aggressive towards humans but will defend themselves if threatened or handled improperly.

Specie simili

Painted Comber

Serranus scriba

Serranus scriba has a more robust body, a distinct blue blotch on the belly, and a more intricate pattern of blue lines on the head. Its vertical bands are often less defined and more blotchy than S. cabrilla.

Brown Comber

Serranus hepatus

Serranus hepatus is generally smaller, has a more uniform brownish coloration, and typically exhibits fewer, broader vertical bands that are often less distinct. It also lacks the prominent longitudinal lines of S. cabrilla.
