Body Shape
Look for a torpedo-shaped, streamlined body, typical of fast-swimming scombrids.
Coloration and Stripes
Observe the dark metallic blue-green dorsal side with distinctive oblique, dark stripes (5-11) running upwards and backwards from the lateral line. The belly is silvery white.
Finlets
Note the presence of 8-9 dorsal finlets and 6-8 anal finlets behind the main dorsal and anal fins, a key characteristic of the Scombridae family.
Scales
Feel for the absence of scales over most of the body, except for a distinct corselet of larger scales around the pectoral fin and along the lateral line.
Mouth and Teeth
Examine the mouth for small, conical teeth arranged in a single row in both jaws.

Fatti chiave
Speed Demonbehavior
Atlantic Bonito are incredibly fast swimmers, capable of bursts of speed to catch their prey. Their streamlined body and powerful tail are perfectly adapted for a pelagic, predatory lifestyle.
No Swim Bladderinteresting
Unlike many fish, Sarda sarda lacks a swim bladder. To maintain buoyancy, they must constantly swim, a characteristic shared with other fast-swimming scombrids like tunas.
Opportunistic Predatorbehavior
Their diet consists primarily of small schooling fish such as sardines, anchovies, and mackerel, but they are opportunistic and will also consume squid and crustaceans.
Migratory Patternsbehavior
Atlantic Bonito undertake extensive seasonal migrations, moving into warmer coastal waters during spring and summer for spawning and feeding, and retreating to deeper or more temperate waters in winter.
Game Fish Appealinteresting
Due to their fighting spirit and speed, Atlantic Bonito are a popular target for recreational anglers, providing an exciting challenge on light tackle.

Skipjack Tuna
Katsuwonus pelamis
Skipjack Tuna have distinct longitudinal dark stripes on their belly, whereas Atlantic Bonito have oblique stripes on their dorsal side. Skipjack also have a more robust body and a larger eye relative to their head size.
Little Tunny
Euthynnus alletteratus
Little Tunny have a series of dark spots or blotches below the pectoral fin and wavy, irregular dark lines on their back, which are less defined and more numerous than the Atlantic Bonito's oblique stripes. They also have a smaller maximum size.
Atlantic Mackerel
Scomber scombrus
Atlantic Mackerel are generally smaller, have more numerous and wavy dark bars on their back that extend further down the sides, and lack the distinct corselet of scales found in bonitos. Their body is also more slender.
