Oligotrophic (nutrient-poor) and mesotrophic lakes, preferring rocky substrates for spawning. Requires stable cold temperatures and high dissolved oxygen levels throughout the water column.

Native to northern North America, including Canada (most provinces and territories), Alaska, and the Great Lakes region of the United States. Introduced to many other cold-water lakes globally, including parts of Europe (e.g., Italy, where it is known as 'Salmerino di lago'), South America, and Asia.
