Descrizione

Salvelinus fontinalis, commonly known as the Brook Trout, is a species of freshwater fish in the salmon family Salmonidae. Despite its common name, it is actually a char, not a true trout. It is native to eastern North America and is highly prized by anglers for its beauty and fighting spirit. Brook Trout are characterized by their vibrant coloration, including a dark green to brown background, with distinctive worm-like markings (vermiculations) on their back and dorsal fin, and scattered red spots (often with blue halos) along their flanks. They are an indicator species for healthy, cold, and clear aquatic environments.

Colorazione
Dorsal surface dark green to brown with distinctive worm-like (vermiculated) markings. Sides are lighter, often with scattered red spots, many of which are surrounded by blue halos. Ventral surface is white to reddish-orange, especially during spawning. Lower fins (pelvic, anal, caudal) have a distinctive white leading edge, followed by a black stripe, and then reddish-orange.

Pinna dorsale
Single, relatively short dorsal fin with 10-14 rays, often with vermiculations.
Pinna caudale
Slightly forked to square (hence 'Squaretail'), especially in younger fish. Becomes more square with age.
Pinna pettorale
Paired, located just behind the operculum.
Pinne distintive
Adipose fin present, characteristic of salmonids. Pelvic and anal fins have a prominent white leading edge, followed by a black stripe.

Consigli per l'identificazione

Coloration and Markings

Look for the distinctive worm-like (vermiculated) patterns on the back and dorsal fin, and the red spots with blue halos on the sides. The white leading edge on the lower fins is a key identifier.

Tail Shape

The tail is typically square or only slightly forked, especially in comparison to other trout species.

Adipose Fin

Presence of a small, fleshy adipose fin between the dorsal and caudal fins confirms it as a salmonid.

Absence of Black Spots

Unlike many true trout (e.g., Rainbow Trout, Brown Trout), Brook Trout typically lack prominent black spots on their body or fins.

Habitat

Tipo di acqua
freshwater
Profondità
Typically found in shallow to moderate depths (0.5-5 meters) in streams and rivers, but can inhabit deeper areas of lakes.
Ambiente
Cold, clear, well-oxygenated streams, rivers, and lakes. Prefers areas with gravel or rocky bottoms, undercut banks, submerged logs, and overhanging vegetation for cover. Highly sensitive to water temperature and pollution.
Areale geografico
Native to eastern North America, ranging from Georgia and the Appalachian Mountains north to eastern Canada (Labrador, Newfoundland, Quebec, Ontario, Maritime Provinces). Widely introduced elsewhere, including western North America, Europe, and parts of Asia.

Fatti chiave

Char, Not Troutinteresting

Despite its common name 'Brook Trout', Salvelinus fontinalis is actually a char, belonging to the genus Salvelinus, which also includes Lake Trout and Arctic Char. True trout belong to the genera Salmo and Oncorhynchus.

Indicator Speciesbehavior

Brook Trout are highly sensitive to water quality and temperature. Their presence is often an indicator of a healthy, cold, and pristine aquatic ecosystem.

Hybridizationevolution

Brook Trout can hybridize with Brown Trout (Salmo trutta) to produce a sterile hybrid known as the 'Tiger Trout' (Salmo trutta x Salvelinus fontinalis), which has distinctive vermiculated patterns resembling a tiger's stripes.

Spawning Colorsbehavior

During the autumn spawning season, male Brook Trout develop incredibly vibrant colors, with their bellies turning a brilliant orange or red, and their fins becoming more intensely colored.

Coaster Brook Troutinteresting

A unique anadromous (or adfluvial) population of Brook Trout, known as 'Coaster Brook Trout', historically inhabited the Great Lakes, migrating between rivers and the lake. These fish can grow significantly larger than their stream-dwelling counterparts.

Informazioni di sicurezza

Sicuro
  • Livello di sicurezza: safe
  • Velenoso: No
  • Commestibilità: edible
  • Note sul maneggio: Handle with wet hands to protect their delicate slime coat. Minimize time out of water, especially if practicing catch-and-release, as they are sensitive to stress and temperature changes. No sharp spines or venomous parts.

Specie simili

Brown Trout

Salmo trutta

Brown Trout have prominent dark spots (often with light halos) and sometimes red spots, but lack the vermiculations on the back and dorsal fin, and do not have the white leading edge on their lower fins. Their tail is typically more forked.

Rainbow Trout

Oncorhynchus mykiss

Rainbow Trout have numerous small black spots on their body, dorsal fin, and caudal fin, and a distinctive pink or red lateral stripe. They lack the vermiculations and the white-edged fins of the Brook Trout. Their tail is typically more deeply forked.

Lake Trout

Salvelinus namaycush

Lake Trout are also chars, but typically have a more deeply forked tail, lighter spots on a darker background (no red spots with blue halos), and lack the prominent vermiculations and white-edged fins of the Brook Trout. They are generally much larger.
