Descrizione

Piaractus brachypomus, commonly known as the Red-bellied Pacu, is a large, freshwater characin fish native to the Amazon and Orinoco basins of South America. It is a commercially important food fish and a popular species in aquaculture and the aquarium trade, though its large adult size often leads to it being outgrown by hobbyists. It is characterized by its deep, compressed body, often with a reddish coloration on the ventral side, particularly in juveniles and subadults. Its dentition, resembling human molars, is adapted for its largely herbivorous and omnivorous diet.

Caratteristiche fisiche

Forma del corpo
compressed
Colorazione
Juveniles typically exhibit a silvery body with a prominent red or orange patch on the belly and lower flanks, often extending to the anal fin. As they mature, the red coloration fades, and adults become more uniformly dark grey to blackish, sometimes with a lighter belly. The operculum may have a reddish tint.
Tipo di squame
cycloid
Posizione della bocca
terminal
Caratteristiche distintive
Deep, laterally compressed body, Large, robust scales, Adipose fin present, Strong, molar-like teeth, resembling human dentition, Absence of a keel on the belly (distinguishes from some Colossoma species)
Pinna dorsale
Single, relatively short dorsal fin with 10-11 soft rays, positioned mid-body.
Pinna caudale
Large, deeply forked caudal fin, often with a darker margin.
Pinna pettorale
Well-developed pectoral fins, typically clear or slightly dusky.
Pinne distintive
Anal fin is relatively long, extending from behind the pelvic fins to near the caudal peduncle, with 24-28 soft rays. Pelvic fins are small and located abdominally. Adipose fin is small and fleshy.

Consigli per l'identificazione

Dentition

The most definitive feature is their unique, human-like molariform teeth, adapted for crushing seeds and nuts. This distinguishes them from piranhas, which have sharp, pointed, interlocking teeth.

Body Shape and Coloration

Deep, compressed body. Juveniles have a distinct red belly, which fades in adults to a more uniform dark grey/black. The body is generally deeper and more rounded than many piranha species.

Adipose Fin

Presence of a small, fleshy adipose fin between the dorsal and caudal fins, a characteristic of characins.

Absence of Ventral Keel

Unlike some species in the genus Colossoma (e.g., Colossoma macropomum), Piaractus brachypomus lacks a prominent, serrated keel on its belly.

Habitat

Tipo di acqua
freshwater
Profondità
Typically found in shallow to moderately deep waters, including flooded forests, oxbow lakes, and main river channels.
Ambiente
Native to large river systems, particularly the Amazon and Orinoco basins. Inhabits both clear and blackwater rivers, preferring areas with submerged vegetation, fallen trees, and other cover. Migrates into flooded forests during high water periods for feeding and spawning.
Areale geografico
Native to South America, primarily the Amazon and Orinoco River basins in countries such as Brazil, Peru, Ecuador, Colombia, Venezuela, and Bolivia. Introduced to various other regions globally for aquaculture and sport fishing.

Informazioni sull'acquario

  • Livello di cura: advanced
  • Temperamento: semi-aggressive
  • Dieta: omnivore
  • Dimensione minima della vasca: 1000 gallons (3785 liters) for a single adult, significantly larger for multiple individuals
  • Temperatura: 75-82°F (24-28°C)
  • Livello di pH: 6.0-7.5
  • Durezza: 5-15 dGH
  • Compatibilità: Best kept in very large aquariums with other large, robust fish that can tolerate its size and occasional boisterous behavior. Not suitable for community tanks with smaller fish.
  • Requisiti speciali: Requires an extremely large aquarium with powerful filtration due to its size and waste production. A varied diet of high-quality pellets, fresh fruits, vegetables, and occasional protein sources is essential. Needs ample swimming space and secure tank lids as they are known jumpers. Prone to stunted growth and health issues in inadequate environments.

Informazioni in natura

  • Stato di conservazione: least concern
  • Stagionalità: Spawning typically occurs during the rainy season (November to March) when water levels rise and flood plains become accessible. Fishing activity often increases during the dry season when fish are concentrated in main river channels.
  • Prezzo di mercato: Varies significantly by region and size, but generally a high-value food fish in its native range.
  • Importanza commerciale: high
  • Sapore: Mild, white, flaky flesh, often compared to tilapia or carp.
  • Consistenza: Firm and moist.
  • Metodi di cottura: Grilled, Baked, Fried, Steamed
  • Valore nutrizionale: Good source of protein and omega-3 fatty acids.

Fatti chiave

Human-like Teethinteresting

Piaractus brachypomus is famous for its unique dentition, which closely resembles human molars, adapted for crushing seeds and nuts.

Piranha Cousininteresting

Despite their similar appearance and common misidentification, pacu are closely related to piranhas, both belonging to the family Serrasalmidae, but pacu are primarily herbivorous/omnivorous.

Aquarium Outgrowerbehavior

Often sold as small 'red-bellied piranhas' in the aquarium trade, these fish can grow to over 3 feet (1 meter) and weigh more than 50 pounds (22 kg), quickly outgrowing most home aquariums.

Ecological Seed Disperserbehavior

In their native Amazonian habitat, pacu play a crucial ecological role as seed dispersers, consuming fruits and nuts and spreading seeds through their waste, aiding forest regeneration.

Migratory Spawnersbehavior

Piaractus brachypomus undertakes significant migrations during the rainy season, moving from main river channels into flooded forests to spawn and feed on abundant fruits and seeds.

Informazioni di sicurezza

Maneggiare con cura
  • Livello di sicurezza: caution
  • Velenoso: No
  • Commestibilità: edible
  • Note sul maneggio: While not venomous, Piaractus brachypomus possesses powerful jaws and strong, human-like teeth capable of inflicting a painful bite. Care should be taken when handling, especially larger specimens. They can also be very strong and thrash violently when caught, potentially causing injury. Anglers should use appropriate gear and exercise caution when unhooking.

Specie simili

Black Pacu

Colossoma macropomum

C. macropomum typically grows larger, has a more rounded body profile, and possesses a distinct, serrated keel along its belly. Its teeth are also molar-like but generally more robust and less 'human-like' than P. brachypomus. Juveniles of C. macropomum often have dark spots on their flanks, which are absent in P. brachypomus.

Piranha species (e.g., Red-bellied Piranha)

Pygocentrus nattereri

Piranhas have sharp, triangular, interlocking teeth designed for shearing flesh, whereas pacu have blunt, molar-like teeth for crushing. Piranhas generally have a more aggressive demeanor and a more compact, less deep body shape compared to pacu. The red coloration in P. brachypomus juveniles is typically more extensive on the belly, while in P. nattereri, it's often concentrated on the throat and lower flanks.

Silver Dollar

Metynnis argenteus

Silver dollars are much smaller, typically reaching only 6-8 inches (15-20 cm). While they share a similar compressed, disc-like body shape and silvery coloration, their dentition is different, and they lack the robust build and large size of pacu.
