Descrizione

Parambassis ranga, commonly known as the Indian Glassy Fish or Indian Glassfish, is a small, translucent freshwater fish belonging to the family Ambassidae. Its most striking feature is its almost completely transparent body, allowing internal organs and skeletal structure to be visible. This transparency serves as a form of camouflage in its natural habitat. They are typically schooling fish and are known for their peaceful demeanor, making them popular in the aquarium trade. However, a significant portion of the aquarium trade specimens are artificially dyed, a practice that is detrimental to the fish's health and lifespan.

Caratteristiche fisiche

Forma del corpo
compressed
Colorazione
Almost entirely transparent, with a silvery sheen on the operculum and sometimes a faint yellowish tint. Artificially dyed specimens display vibrant, unnatural colors (e.g., blue, red, green, orange) which fade over time.
Tipo di squame
cycloid

superior
Caratteristiche distintive
Highly transparent body, allowing visibility of internal organs and skeletal structure., Two distinct dorsal fins, the first spiny and the second soft-rayed., Small, upturned mouth., Relatively large eyes.
Pinna dorsale
Two dorsal fins: D1 VII; D2 I, 9-11. The first dorsal fin has 7 strong spines, and the second has 1 spine and 9-11 soft rays.
Pinna caudale
Caudal fin forked, with 17 principal rays.
Pinna pettorale
Pectoral fins are relatively small, with 11-12 rays.
Pinne distintive
Anal fin with III spines and 9-11 soft rays. Pelvic fins with I spine and 5 soft rays.

Consigli per l'identificazione

Transparency

The most defining characteristic is its almost completely see-through body. If the fish is brightly colored (blue, red, green), it is likely an artificially dyed specimen.

Dorsal Fins

Observe the two distinct dorsal fins: a spiny anterior fin and a soft-rayed posterior fin. This is a key feature of the Ambassidae family.

Size

Adults typically reach a maximum standard length of 4-5 cm (1.6-2 inches), rarely exceeding 8 cm (3.1 inches).

Body Shape

Laterally compressed, giving it a thin, disc-like appearance when viewed from the front.

Habitat

Tipo di acqua
freshwater
Profondità
Typically found in shallow waters, often near the surface or amongst vegetation.
Ambiente
Slow-moving or stagnant waters of rivers, streams, canals, ponds, and ditches. Often associated with dense aquatic vegetation, which provides cover and food sources. Can tolerate a range of water conditions but prefers clear water.
Areale geografico
Native to South Asia, specifically India, Bangladesh, Myanmar, Nepal, Pakistan, and Thailand. Its distribution extends across the Ganges-Brahmaputra basin and other river systems in the region.

Informazioni sull'acquario

  • Livello di cura: intermediate
  • Temperamento: peaceful
  • Dieta: carnivore
  • Dimensione minima della vasca: 20 gallons
  • Temperatura: 20-28°C (68-82°F)
  • Livello di pH: 6.5-7.5
  • Durezza: 5-15 dGH
  • Compatibilità: Compatible with other peaceful, similarly sized fish. Avoid very active or aggressive tank mates that might stress them or outcompete them for food. Best kept in schools of 6 or more.
  • Requisiti speciali: Requires clean, well-filtered water with moderate flow. Benefits from a planted aquarium with open swimming spaces and some hiding spots. Undyed specimens are more robust. Live or frozen foods are preferred for optimal health and coloration.

Informazioni in natura

  • Stato di conservazione: least concern
  • Stagionalità: Breeding typically occurs during the monsoon season in their native range, when water levels rise and food is abundant.
  • Prezzo di mercato: Low to moderate for undyed specimens; often very low for dyed specimens due to their compromised health.
  • Importanza commerciale: medium
  • Sapore: Mild, slightly sweet
  • Consistenza: Delicate, flaky
  • Metodi di cottura: Fried, Steamed, Curried
  • Valore nutrizionale: Good source of protein, low in fat. Specific nutritional data is not widely published for this species as a food fish.

Fatti chiave

Natural Camouflagebehavior

The extreme transparency of Parambassis ranga serves as an effective form of camouflage in its natural, often clear, freshwater habitats, making it difficult for predators to spot.

Dyed Fish Controversyinteresting

A significant number of 'painted' or 'dyed' glassfish are sold in the aquarium trade. This involves injecting the fish with artificial dyes, a cruel practice that severely compromises their immune system, shortens their lifespan, and causes immense stress.

Sexual Dimorphismbehavior

During breeding season, males of Parambassis ranga develop a more intense golden or yellowish tint, and their fins may become slightly elongated. Females appear rounder due to carrying eggs.

Ecological Rolebehavior

As a small, insectivorous fish, Parambassis ranga plays a role in controlling insect populations in its native ecosystems and serves as a food source for larger predatory fish and birds.

Informazioni di sicurezza

Sicuro
  • Livello di sicurezza: safe
  • Velenoso: No
  • Commestibilità: edible
  • Note sul maneggio: Generally safe to handle, but like all fish, care should be taken to avoid direct contact with spines, especially the dorsal and anal fin spines, which can cause minor punctures. Always use a net for transfer. Avoid excessive handling to minimize stress.

Specie simili

Malabar Glassy Perchlet

Parambassis thomassi

P. thomassi generally has a more elongated body shape and can grow slightly larger. Its transparency might be less pronounced, and it often exhibits a more silvery or yellowish hue. Geographic distribution also differs, with P. thomassi being endemic to the Western Ghats of India.

High-finned Glassy Perchlet

Parambassis pulcinella

P. pulcinella is distinguished by its significantly higher and more prominent first dorsal fin, especially in males. It also has a more restricted distribution, primarily found in Myanmar.

Burmese Glassfish

Parambassis siamensis

P. siamensis is very similar to P. ranga and was historically often confused. Genetic studies have helped differentiate them. P. siamensis typically has a slightly different meristic count (e.g., fewer lateral line scales) and a more restricted distribution in Southeast Asia.
