Descrizione

Micropterus salmoides, commonly known as the Largemouth Bass or 'Persico Trota' in Italian, is a freshwater ray-finned fish, a species of black bass in the sunfish family (Centrarchidae). It is the state fish of Alabama, Florida, Georgia, Mississippi, and Tennessee. It is a popular game fish, highly sought after by anglers due to its aggressive fighting style. This species is characterized by its large mouth, with the upper jaw extending beyond the posterior margin of the eye. It exhibits a robust, somewhat compressed body and is typically olive green to grey-green on the back and sides, fading to white on the belly, often with a dark, irregular lateral stripe or blotches along the flanks.

Caratteristiche fisiche

Forma del corpo
torpedo
Colorazione
Dorsal surface olive green to grey-green, fading to lighter green or white on the ventral surface. A prominent, irregular, dark lateral stripe or series of blotches often runs from the operculum to the caudal fin base. Some individuals may appear darker or lighter depending on habitat and water clarity. Fins are typically dusky or clear.
Tipo di squame

Caratteristiche distintive
Large mouth, with the maxilla extending beyond the posterior margin of the eye in adults., Deeply notched dorsal fin, appearing almost as two separate fins., Dark lateral stripe or series of blotches along the flanks., Absence of scales on the preopercle and opercle (though some scales may be present on the opercle).
Pinna dorsale
Two dorsal fins, deeply notched, appearing almost separate. The first dorsal fin has 9-11 spines, and the second dorsal fin has 12-14 soft rays.
Pinna caudale
Slightly forked caudal fin.
Pinna pettorale
Paired pectoral fins, relatively small.
Pinne distintive
Pelvic fins are thoracic, located directly below or slightly anterior to the pectoral fins. Anal fin has 3 spines and 10-12 soft rays.

Consigli per l'identificazione

Mouth Size

The most distinguishing feature: the upper jaw (maxilla) extends well past the posterior margin of the eye when the mouth is closed. This is a key differentiator from Smallmouth Bass.

Dorsal Fin

The dorsal fin is deeply notched, almost appearing as two separate fins. The spiny anterior portion is clearly separated from the soft-rayed posterior portion.

Lateral Stripe

Presence of a prominent, often broken or blotchy, dark lateral stripe running horizontally along the body. This stripe can be more or less distinct depending on water clarity and habitat.

Scales on Opercle

The opercle (gill cover) is typically scaled, but the preopercle (bone in front of the opercle) is usually scaleless or has very few scales. This can be a subtle but useful identification point.

Habitat

Tipo di acqua
freshwater
Profondità
Typically found in shallow to moderate depths (1-6 meters), but can inhabit deeper waters.
Ambiente
Prefers warm, clear, vegetated lakes, ponds, reservoirs, and slow-moving rivers. Often associated with submerged vegetation, fallen trees, docks, and other structures that provide cover for ambush predation. Tolerant of a wide range of water conditions but thrives in stable environments.
Areale geografico
Native to eastern and central North America, from the Great Lakes basin and Mississippi River basin south to Florida and northeastern Mexico. Widely introduced globally for sport fishing, including throughout Europe (e.g., Italy, Spain, France), Africa, Asia, and South America, often becoming an invasive species.

Informazioni sull'acquario

  • Livello di cura: advanced
  • Temperamento: aggressive
  • Dieta: carnivore
  • Dimensione minima della vasca: 500 gallons (for a single adult)
  • Temperatura: 65-75°F (18-24°C)
  • Livello di pH: 6.5-7.5
  • Durezza: 5-15 dGH
  • Compatibilità: Not suitable for community tanks. Best kept alone or with very large, equally aggressive fish that cannot be consumed.
  • Requisiti speciali: Requires a very large tank with ample hiding spots (rocks, driftwood, artificial plants) and open swimming areas. Excellent filtration is crucial due to their large size and predatory diet. Live or frozen foods are essential. Not typically recommended for home aquaria due to size and predatory nature.

Informazioni in natura

  • Stato di conservazione: least concern
  • Stagionalità: Spawning occurs in spring (March-June) when water temperatures reach 60-75°F (15-24°C). Feeding activity is high during warmer months and decreases in winter.
  • Prezzo di mercato: Varies, generally not a primary commercial food fish, but significant in recreational fishing economy.
  • Importanza commerciale: low
  • Sapore: Mild, slightly flaky white meat.
  • Consistenza: Firm, white, and flaky.
  • Metodi di cottura: Frying, Baking, Grilling, Pan-searing
  • Valore nutrizionale: Good source of protein, low in fat. Contains Omega-3 fatty acids.

Fatti chiave

Top Predatorbehavior

Largemouth Bass are apex predators in many freshwater ecosystems, consuming a wide variety of prey including fish, crustaceans, insects, and even small mammals, birds, and reptiles.

Parental Carebehavior

Male Largemouth Bass build nests, guard the eggs, and protect the fry for several weeks after hatching, exhibiting strong parental care.

World Recordrecord

The current world record Largemouth Bass, caught by George Perry in 1932, weighed 22 pounds, 4 ounces (10.09 kg). A second fish of the same weight was caught in Japan in 2009, tying the record.

Invasive Speciesinteresting

Due to its popularity as a sport fish, Micropterus salmoides has been introduced globally, often leading to significant ecological impacts on native fish populations and aquatic ecosystems.

Ambush Predatorbehavior

Largemouth Bass are classic ambush predators, often hiding in dense cover and darting out to strike unsuspecting prey.

Informazioni di sicurezza

Sicuro
  • Livello di sicurezza: safe
  • Velenoso: No
  • Commestibilità: edible
  • Note sul maneggio: Largemouth Bass have sharp spines on their dorsal and anal fins, which can cause painful punctures. Handle with care, especially when removing hooks. Use a lip-gripping tool or grasp firmly by the lower jaw to control the fish and avoid fin spines. They are not venomous.

Specie simili

Smallmouth Bass

Micropterus dolomieu

The upper jaw of the Smallmouth Bass does not extend beyond the posterior margin of the eye. Its coloration is typically more brownish with vertical bars or blotches, rather than a distinct horizontal stripe. The dorsal fin notch is less pronounced.

Spotted Bass

Micropterus punctulatus

The upper jaw of the Spotted Bass extends to or slightly beyond the posterior margin of the eye, similar to Largemouth, but it has a patch of teeth on its tongue (which Largemouth lacks) and rows of dark spots below the lateral line, forming a diamond pattern. The dorsal fin notch is also less pronounced than in Largemouth Bass.
