Descrizione

Lota lota, commonly known as the Burbot, is the only freshwater species of the cod family (Gadidae). It is a cold-water, demersal fish characterized by its elongated, eel-like body, a single prominent barbel on its chin, and two dorsal fins. It is primarily nocturnal and prefers clear, cold, oxygen-rich waters. Its cryptic coloration provides excellent camouflage against the riverbed or lake bottom.

Caratteristiche fisiche

Consigli per l'identificazione

Chin Barbel

The single, prominent barbel on the chin is a key distinguishing feature, unique among freshwater fish in its range.

Dorsal Fins

Two distinct dorsal fins, with the second being notably long, almost reaching the tail.

Body Shape

Its elongated, eel-like body, combined with the mottled coloration, helps differentiate it from other bottom-dwelling fish.

Pelvic Fins

The jugular (throat-positioned) pelvic fins are another characteristic of the cod family.

Habitat

Tipo di acqua
freshwater
Profondità
Typically found in deeper sections of lakes and rivers, often near the bottom, but can be found in shallower areas during spawning.
Ambiente
Prefers clear, cold, well-oxygenated waters of large rivers and deep lakes. Often associated with rocky or gravelly substrates, but also found in areas with sand and silt, especially where there are submerged structures or vegetation for cover. Highly tolerant of low light conditions.
Areale geografico
Circumpolar distribution in the Northern Hemisphere, including North America (Canada, Alaska, northern US states), Europe (Scandinavia, Russia, Central Europe), and Asia (Siberia). Its southern range limits are often defined by water temperature.

Informazioni sull'acquario

  • Livello di cura: advanced
  • Temperamento: semi-aggressive
  • Dieta: carnivore
  • Dimensione minima della vasca: 200 gallons
  • Temperatura: 35-60°F (2-15°C)
  • Livello di pH: 6.5-8.0
  • Durezza: 5-20 dGH
  • Compatibilità: Best kept in a species-specific tank or with other large, cold-water, non-aggressive fish that cannot be consumed. Avoid small fish or those that require warmer temperatures.
  • Requisiti speciali: Requires a large, well-filtered tank with excellent oxygenation and stable cold temperatures. Substrate should be soft (sand or fine gravel) with plenty of hiding places (rocks, driftwood, PVC pipes). Dim lighting is preferred due to their nocturnal nature. They are sensitive to poor water quality and elevated temperatures.

Informazioni in natura

  • Stato di conservazione: least concern
  • Stagionalità: Spawns in winter (December-March). Best fished in colder months when they are more active and concentrated.
  • Prezzo di mercato: Varies regionally, generally moderate to high in areas where it is fished commercially.
  • Importanza commerciale: medium
  • Sapore: Mild, flaky, white flesh, often compared to cod or lobster.
  • Consistenza: Firm, delicate, and non-oily.
  • Metodi di cottura: Boiling, Steaming, Baking, Frying, Poaching
  • Valore nutrizionale: Good source of protein, omega-3 fatty acids, and vitamins (e.g., B12, D).

Fatti chiave

Only Freshwater Codinteresting

The Burbot (Lota lota) is the sole freshwater representative of the otherwise marine cod family (Gadidae).

Nocturnal Predatorbehavior

Burbot are primarily nocturnal predators, using their keen sense of smell and the chin barbel to locate prey in low light conditions.

Winter Spawnersbehavior

Unlike most freshwater fish, Burbot spawn in the winter, often under ice, in shallow, gravelly areas.

Cold Water Specialistsbehavior

They are highly adapted to cold water environments and are intolerant of warm temperatures, which limits their southern distribution.

"Poor Man's Lobster"interesting

Due to its firm, white, flaky flesh and mild taste, burbot is often referred to as "poor man's lobster" when cooked, particularly when boiled or steamed.

Informazioni di sicurezza

Sicuro
  • Livello di sicurezza: safe
  • Velenoso: No
  • Commestibilità: edible
  • Note sul maneggio: Burbot are not venomous and do not possess sharp spines that pose a significant threat. They can be quite slippery due to a protective mucus layer. Handle carefully to avoid injury to the fish and to prevent it from slipping from your grasp. They are generally docile when handled.

Specie simili

Eels (Anguilla spp.)

Anguilla anguilla (European Eel), Anguilla rostrata (American Eel)

Eels have a single, continuous dorsal, caudal, and anal fin, forming a continuous fringe around the posterior body. Burbot have distinct, separate dorsal, caudal, and anal fins. Eels lack the prominent chin barbel of the burbot.

Sculpins (Cottus spp.)

Cottus gobio (European Bullhead), Cottus bairdi (Mottled Sculpin)

Sculpins have large, broad heads and tapering bodies, but lack the elongated, eel-like body and the single chin barbel of the burbot. Their dorsal fins are typically spiny and soft-rayed, but not as distinctly separated or elongated as the burbot's.

Loaches (Cobitidae family)

Various species (e.g., Barbatula barbatula - Stone Loach)

Loaches typically have multiple barbels around the mouth, not a single chin barbel. Their body shape can be elongated, but their fin structure and overall head morphology differ significantly from the burbot.
