Descrizione

Labrus merula, commonly known as the Brown Wrasse or Tordo nero, is a species of marine ray-finned fish belonging to the family Labridae. It is a robust and relatively large wrasse found in the eastern Atlantic Ocean and the Mediterranean Sea. This species exhibits significant sexual dimorphism and ontogenetic color changes, making identification sometimes challenging. It is a benthic species, typically found in rocky and seagrass habitats.

Can reach up to 50 cm (20 inches) in total length, with a maximum recorded weight of 1.5 kg (3.3 lbs). Body is robust and laterally compressed.

Coloration (Males)

Adult males are typically dark blue to black, often with iridescent blue spots or lines on the head and fins. This dark coloration is a key identifier for 'Tordo nero'.

Coloration (Females/Juveniles)

Females and juveniles are generally brown, reddish-brown, or greenish-brown, often mottled. A dark spot at the caudal fin base can be present.

Mouth and Lips

Possesses thick, fleshy lips and a terminal mouth with conical teeth, characteristic of wrasses.

Dorsal Fin

The single, long dorsal fin with a prominent spiny anterior portion is typical of the genus Labrus.

Habitat

Tipo di acqua
saltwater
Profondità
Typically found from 1 to 50 meters (3 to 164 feet), occasionally deeper to 100 meters (328 feet).
Ambiente
Prefers rocky bottoms, seagrass beds (Posidonia oceanica meadows), and areas with dense algal growth. Juveniles often inhabit shallower, more sheltered areas.
Areale geografico
Eastern Atlantic Ocean from Portugal to Senegal, including the Azores, Madeira, and Canary Islands. Widespread throughout the Mediterranean Sea and the Black Sea.

Informazioni sull'acquario

  • Livello di cura: advanced
  • Temperamento: semi-aggressive
  • Dieta: carnivore
  • Dimensione minima della vasca: 500 liters (130 gallons)
  • Temperatura: 15-22°C (59-72°F)
  • Livello di pH: 8.1-8.4
  • Durezza: 8-12 dKH
  • Compatibilità: Best kept in a species-specific tank or with other large, robust, and non-aggressive temperate marine fish. Avoid keeping with smaller, timid fish or invertebrates that could be prey.
  • Requisiti speciali: Requires a well-established temperate marine aquarium with ample live rock for hiding and foraging. A sand bed is beneficial for potential burrowing. Excellent filtration and stable water parameters are crucial. Not typically recommended for home aquaria due to size and specific temperature requirements.

Informazioni in natura

Fatti chiave

Protogynous Hermaphroditebehavior

Labrus merula is a protogynous hermaphrodite, meaning individuals are born as females and can later change sex to become males. This is common among wrasses.

Nest Builderbehavior

Males build nests from algae and seagrass, which they guard aggressively after females lay their eggs within them. This parental care is a notable reproductive strategy.

Dietary Generalistbehavior

Its diet primarily consists of benthic invertebrates such as crustaceans (crabs, amphipods), mollusks (snails, bivalves), and echinoderms (sea urchins, brittle stars), making it an important predator in its ecosystem.

Longevityinteresting

Brown Wrasses can live for a considerable period, with individuals recorded to live up to 15-20 years in the wild.

Cleaning Behavior (Juveniles)behavior

Juvenile Labrus merula have been observed engaging in cleaning behavior, removing parasites from other fish species, although this is less pronounced than in dedicated cleaner wrasses.

Informazioni di sicurezza

Sicuro
  • Livello di sicurezza: safe
  • Velenoso: No
  • Commestibilità: edible
  • Note sul maneggio: No specific handling precautions beyond standard fish handling. Can deliver a bite if provoked, but not venomous. Spines on the dorsal fin can cause minor punctures.

Specie simili

Green Wrasse

Labrus viridis

Typically bright green to bluish-green, lacking the dark blue/black coloration of adult male L. merula. L. viridis often has a distinct blue line along the lateral line.

Grey Wrasse

Symphodus cinereus

Generally smaller (up to 16 cm), with a more slender body. Coloration is typically greyish or brownish, often with a dark spot on the caudal peduncle and a smaller mouth.

Ballan Wrasse

Labrus bergylta

Larger species (up to 60 cm), with a more variable and often mottled coloration (greens, browns, reds). L. bergylta typically has a more pointed snout and a less uniformly dark body in males compared to L. merula.
