Descrizione

Katsuwonus pelamis, commonly known as the Skipjack Tuna, is a medium-sized perciform fish in the tuna family, Scombridae. It is a highly migratory, epipelagic, and oceanic species, forming large schools, often in association with other tuna species and marine mammals. It is characterized by its streamlined body, dark stripes on its belly, and its importance as a commercial fishery species.

Caratteristiche distintive
4 to 6 dark, longitudinal stripes on the belly, Absence of scales on the body except for the corselet and lateral line, Two dorsal fins, closely set, followed by 7-9 finlets, Anal fin followed by 7-8 finlets, Small, conical teeth
Pinna dorsale
Two dorsal fins; the first is spiny and much longer than the second, which is soft-rayed. They are closely set, with a small interspace. Followed by 7-9 dorsal finlets.
Pinna caudale
Deeply forked caudal fin (tail fin) with a slender caudal peduncle and two small keels on each side.

Small, triangular pelvic fins located below the pectoral fins. The anal fin is similar in shape to the second dorsal fin and is followed by 7-8 anal finlets.

Consigli per l'identificazione

Body Stripes

Look for the characteristic 4 to 6 dark, longitudinal stripes on the belly, which are the most reliable distinguishing feature.

Dorsal Fins

Note the two closely set dorsal fins, with the first being significantly longer and spiny.

Size

Typically smaller than other commercially important tuna species like Yellowfin or Bluefin, usually reaching up to 1 meter in length and 34 kg in weight.

Absence of Scales

The body is largely scaleless, except for a prominent corselet of scales around the pectoral fin and along the lateral line.

Habitat

Tipo di acqua
saltwater
Profondità
Primarily epipelagic, inhabiting surface waters down to about 260 meters (850 feet), but can dive deeper.
Ambiente
Open ocean (oceanic), tropical and subtropical waters worldwide. Prefers waters with temperatures between 17°C and 30°C (63°F and 86°F).
Areale geografico
Circumglobal in tropical and subtropical waters of the Atlantic, Indian, and Pacific Oceans. Absent from the Black Sea and Mediterranean Sea (though occasionally reported in the latter).

Informazioni sull'acquario

  • Livello di cura: expert
  • Temperamento: aggressive
  • Dieta: carnivore
  • Dimensione minima della vasca: Not suitable for home aquaria; requires extremely large public aquarium facilities.
  • Temperatura: 20-29°C (68-84°F)
  • Livello di pH: 8.1-8.4
  • Durezza: Not applicable for home aquaria; oceanic conditions
  • Compatibilità: Not compatible with typical aquarium species due to size, speed, and predatory nature. Only suitable for large, specialized public exhibits with appropriate tank mates.
  • Requisiti speciali: Requires immense swimming space, high water quality, strong filtration, and a constant supply of live or fresh dead prey. Extremely challenging to maintain in captivity.

Informazioni in natura

  • Stato di conservazione: least concern
  • Stagionalità: Present year-round in tropical and subtropical waters, with seasonal migrations to temperate zones driven by prey availability and water temperature.
  • Prezzo di mercato: Varies significantly based on region, processing (fresh, frozen, canned), and market demand. Generally a high-volume, lower-priced tuna compared to Bluefin.
  • Importanza commerciale: high
  • Sapore: Mild, slightly fishy, less rich than other tunas.
  • Consistenza: Firm, flaky, and somewhat dry if overcooked.
  • Metodi di cottura: Canning (most common), Grilling, Pan-searing, Smoking, Sashimi (less common than other tunas)
  • Valore nutrizionale: Excellent source of protein, Omega-3 fatty acids, Vitamin B12, and Selenium. Lower in mercury than larger tuna species.

Fatti chiave

Fast Swimmerbehavior

Skipjack Tuna are incredibly fast swimmers, capable of bursts of speed up to 70 km/h (43 mph), essential for hunting and escaping predators.

Warm-Bloodedinteresting

Like other tunas, Skipjack Tuna are endothermic, meaning they can maintain a body temperature higher than the surrounding water, allowing them to operate efficiently in cooler waters.

Schooling Behaviorbehavior

They form massive schools, often numbering in the thousands, which can extend for miles. These schools are frequently associated with dolphins and whales.

Short Lifespaninteresting

Skipjack Tuna have a relatively short lifespan, typically living for 3-4 years, with a maximum recorded age of around 12 years.

Global Fisheryrecord

Skipjack Tuna accounts for the largest proportion of the global tuna catch, primarily used for canning.

Informazioni di sicurezza

Sicuro
  • Livello di sicurezza: safe
  • Velenoso: No
  • Commestibilità: edible
  • Note sul maneggio: No specific handling precautions beyond standard fish handling. Be mindful of sharp fin rays and the strong tail when handling live or freshly caught specimens.

Specie simili

Atlantic Bonito

Sarda sarda

Atlantic Bonito has oblique, dark stripes on its back, whereas Skipjack Tuna has longitudinal stripes on its belly. Atlantic Bonito also has a more elongated body and a different fin structure.

Frigate Tuna

Auxis thazard

Frigate Tuna has a more robust body, a wider gap between its dorsal fins, and a distinctive pattern of wavy, dark lines on its upper back, not on the belly. It also has a smaller maximum size.

Bullet Tuna

Auxis rochei

Similar to Frigate Tuna, Bullet Tuna has a more compact body and a pattern of dark, wavy lines on its back. Its dorsal fins are widely separated, unlike the closely set fins of the Skipjack.
