Descrizione

The Blood Parrot Cichlid is a man-made hybrid fish, resulting from the cross-breeding of the Midas Cichlid (Amphilophus citrinellus) and the Redhead Cichlid (Cichlasoma synspilum, now often classified as Vieja melanura or Paraneetroplus synspilus). It is characterized by its distinctive, often bright orange or red coloration and a unique, beak-like mouth that cannot fully close. This morphological anomaly is a direct result of its hybrid origin. They are known for their somewhat rounded body shape and large eyes. Due to their hybrid nature, they do not exist in the wild and are exclusively found in aquaculture and the aquarium trade.

Caratteristiche distintive
Beak-like mouth that cannot fully close, giving them a perpetually 'pouting' expression., Large, prominent eyes., Rounded, somewhat compressed body., Often have a nuchal hump (fatty lump on the forehead) in mature males, though less pronounced than in some parent species.

Mouth Structure

The most defining characteristic is the small, beak-like mouth that cannot fully close, giving them a unique facial expression.

Body Shape

Their body is typically rounded and somewhat stout, distinguishing them from the more elongated parent species.

Coloration

Vibrant orange, red, or yellow hues are common, often without the distinct barring or patterns seen in many wild cichlids.

Absence of Wild Populations

If encountered, it will always be in an artificial setting (aquarium, pond), never in a natural aquatic ecosystem.

Habitat

Tipo di acqua
freshwater
Profondità
Not applicable (aquarium species).
Ambiente
Aquarium environments, typically in planted or rocky setups with good filtration.
Areale geografico
Not applicable (man-made hybrid, no natural geographic range).

Informazioni sull'acquario

  • Livello di cura: intermediate
  • Temperamento: semi-aggressive
  • Dieta: omnivore
  • Dimensione minima della vasca: 75 gallons (280 liters) for a single adult, larger for multiple individuals
  • Temperatura: 76-82°F (24-28°C)
  • Livello di pH: 6.5-7.5
  • Durezza: 4-18 dGH
  • Compatibilità: Can be kept with other similarly sized, semi-aggressive cichlids or robust community fish. Avoid very small or overly aggressive tank mates. They are generally peaceful towards fish they cannot swallow, but territorial during breeding attempts (though infertile).
  • Requisiti speciali: Requires a well-filtered tank with plenty of hiding spots (caves, driftwood, rocks) and open swimming areas. Substrate should be sand or fine gravel as they enjoy digging. Live plants may be uprooted. Good water quality is paramount due to their sensitivity to nitrates. Their mouth structure makes feeding challenging; sinking pellets and flakes are preferred, along with occasional frozen or live foods.

Informazioni in natura

  • Stato di conservazione: least concern
  • Stagionalità: Not applicable as they are captive-bred.
  • Prezzo di mercato: Varies by size and coloration, typically moderate for ornamental fish.
  • Importanza commerciale: high
  • Sapore: Not typically consumed due to their ornamental value and hybrid origin.
  • Consistenza: Not typically consumed.
  • Valore nutrizionale: Not typically consumed.

Fatti chiave

Man-Made Origininteresting

The Blood Parrot Cichlid is a hybrid fish, intentionally bred by humans, and does not exist in the wild.

Unique Mouthbehavior

Their most distinctive feature is a small, beak-like mouth that cannot fully close, which can make feeding challenging.

Infertilebehavior

While Blood Parrot Cichlids may pair up and even lay eggs, these eggs are almost always infertile due to their hybrid nature.

Controversial Breedinginteresting

The creation of Blood Parrot Cichlids is controversial among some aquarists due to the health issues and deformities associated with their hybrid genetics.

Color Variantsinteresting

Beyond the common orange/red, there are also 'King Kong Parrot' (larger, more robust), 'Polar Parrot' (albino), and 'Purple Parrot' (dyed) varieties.

Informazioni di sicurezza

Sicuro
  • Livello di sicurezza: safe
  • Velenoso: No
  • Commestibilità: not recommended
  • Note sul maneggio: Blood Parrot Cichlids are not venomous. However, like all cichlids, they can deliver a painful bite if handled carelessly, especially larger specimens. Use a net for transfer and avoid direct contact with hands. Their spines are not venomous but can cause punctures.

Specie simili

Midas Cichlid

Amphilophus citrinellus

Has a normal, fully closing mouth; typically more elongated body; often exhibits more aggressive behavior; natural coloration can vary widely but often includes grey, brown, or yellow with distinct black markings, and can change color dramatically.

Redhead Cichlid

Cichlasoma synspilum (or Vieja melanura)

Possesses a normal, fully closing mouth; more elongated and robust body; distinct red coloration on the head and anterior body, often with black spots or bars on the flanks; generally larger and more aggressive than Blood Parrots.

Flowerhorn Cichlid

Various Amphilophus and Cichlasoma hybrids

Also a hybrid, but typically has a more elongated body, a very prominent nuchal hump (kok) in males, and distinct black markings (flower patterns) along the flanks. Their mouth structure is generally normal, unlike the Blood Parrot.
