Consigli per l'identificazione

Eyes

The most striking feature is the exceptionally large, often reddish or glassy-looking eyes, which are disproportionately large compared to the head.

Body Shape and Color

Deep, compressed body, typically reddish to silvery-red. Look for irregular darker blotches or spots on the body, which can vary in intensity.

Mouth

Large, oblique mouth with a prominent, projecting lower jaw.

Pelvic Fins

Relatively long pelvic fins, often with a distinct dark or blackish coloration, especially in adults.

Fin Ray Count

Dorsal fin with 10 spines and 12-14 soft rays; anal fin with 3 spines and 13-15 soft rays. These counts can help distinguish it from other priacanthids.

Profondità
Typically found from shallow reef crests down to about 200 meters (650 feet), most commonly in depths of 5-50 meters.
Ambiente
Coral reefs, rocky reefs, caves, crevices, and under ledges. Prefers areas with plenty of hiding spots during the day. Juveniles may be found in shallower, more protected areas.

Fatti chiave

Nocturnal Hunterbehavior

Heteropriacanthus cruentatus is strictly nocturnal, spending its days hidden in dark recesses of reefs and emerging only after sunset to hunt.

Giant Eyesamazing

Its exceptionally large eyes are a key adaptation for low-light conditions, allowing it to effectively hunt in the darkness of night.

Color Changing Abilitiesbehavior

This species can rapidly change its body coloration from pale pink to deep red, likely for camouflage or communication.

Solitary or Small Groupsbehavior

While often seen solitary, they can sometimes form small aggregations in their daytime hiding spots.

Circumtropical Distributioninteresting

Heteropriacanthus cruentatus boasts one of the widest distributions among reef fish, found in tropical and subtropical waters of all major oceans.

Informazioni di sicurezza

Maneggiare con cura
  • Livello di sicurezza: caution
  • Velenoso: No
  • Commestibilità: edible
  • Note sul maneggio: While not venomous, the dorsal, anal, and pelvic fins possess sharp spines that can inflict painful punctures. Handle with care to avoid injury. They are generally not aggressive towards humans unless provoked or handled.

Specie simili

Shortfin Bigeye

Pristigenys alta

Pristigenys alta has a much deeper, more rounded body profile, shorter pelvic fins, and typically a more uniform red coloration without the distinct blotches often seen on Heteropriacanthus cruentatus. Its dorsal and anal fins are also higher and more rounded.

Longfin Bigeye

Cookeolus japonicus

Cookeolus japonicus is distinguished by its extremely elongated pelvic fins, which can extend well past the anal fin origin, and a more uniformly red body. Its dorsal and anal fins are also more pointed posteriorly.

Moontail Bullseye

Priacanthus hamrur

Priacanthus hamrur typically has a more silvery-pink to red body, often with faint horizontal lines, and a distinctly lunate (crescent-shaped) caudal fin. Its eyes are large but generally not as 'glassy' or reflective as H. cruentatus, and its pelvic fins are not as prominently dark.
