Descrizione

Gobio gobio, commonly known as the Gudgeon, is a small, bottom-dwelling freshwater fish belonging to the family Cyprinidae. It is characterized by its elongated, cylindrical body, subterminal mouth with two barbels, and mottled coloration that provides excellent camouflage against riverbeds. This species is widely distributed across Europe and parts of Asia, inhabiting clear, well-oxygenated rivers and streams with gravelly or sandy substrates. Gudgeons are primarily nocturnal feeders, consuming a variety of benthic invertebrates. They are known for their schooling behavior, especially when young, and their ability to tolerate a range of environmental conditions, though they prefer clean, flowing water. While not a primary target for commercial fisheries, they are often used as bait fish and are popular among recreational anglers due to their abundance and willingness to bite. Their ecological role includes bioturbation of sediments and serving as a food source for larger predatory fish and birds.

Consigli per l'identificazione

Barbels

The presence of two distinct barbels at the corners of the mouth is a key identifier, distinguishing it from many other small cyprinids.

Mouth Position

Its subterminal mouth, adapted for bottom feeding, is characteristic.

Body Shape and Coloration

The elongated, cylindrical body with mottled brown/olive coloration and dark lateral blotches helps in identification, especially in its preferred habitat.

Fin Spotting

Small dark spots on the dorsal and caudal fins are often present and can aid in identification.

Habitat

Tipo di acqua
freshwater
Profondità
Typically found in shallow to moderately deep waters, usually less than 5 meters.
Ambiente
Prefers clear, well-oxygenated rivers, streams, and occasionally lakes with gravel, sand, or fine silt substrates. Often found in areas with moderate to strong currents, but also in slower-moving sections. Requires clean water with minimal pollution.
Areale geografico
Widespread across Europe, from the British Isles and France eastward through Central and Eastern Europe, extending into parts of Russia and Asia Minor. Absent from Scandinavia (except southern Sweden), southern Italy, and the Iberian Peninsula (except for some isolated populations).

  • Compatibilità: Compatible with other peaceful, coldwater fish of similar size, such as minnows, dace, and loaches. Avoid aggressive or fin-nipping species.
  • Requisiti speciali: Requires a well-oxygenated tank with a fine gravel or sand substrate for foraging and burrowing. Provide plenty of hiding spots using rocks, driftwood, and plants. Good filtration is essential to maintain water quality. They are schooling fish, so keep them in groups of 6 or more.

Fatti chiave

Bottom Dwellerbehavior

Gudgeons are primarily benthic fish, spending most of their time foraging on the riverbed for food.

Bait Fishinteresting

Due to their abundance and willingness to bite, Gudgeons are frequently used as live bait for larger predatory fish like pike and perch.

Sensitive to Pollutioninteresting

While adaptable, Gudgeons prefer clean, well-oxygenated water and their presence can be an indicator of good water quality in a river system.

Schooling Behaviorbehavior

Young Gudgeons often form large schools, providing safety in numbers against predators.

Nocturnal Foragersbehavior

Although they can be active during the day, Gudgeons are more active and feed predominantly during the night.

Informazioni di sicurezza

Sicuro
  • Livello di sicurezza: safe
  • Velenoso: No
  • Commestibilità: edible
  • Note sul maneggio: Gudgeons are harmless to handle. Care should be taken to minimize stress if caught, and they should be returned to the water quickly if not intended for consumption or bait. Their scales can be easily damaged, so wet hands are recommended if handling.

Specie simili

Stone Loach

Barbatula barbatula

Stone Loaches have six barbels around the mouth (Gudgeon has two), a more elongated and slender body, and typically lack the distinct lateral blotches of the Gudgeon. Their dorsal fin is also positioned further back.

Minnow

Phoxinus phoxinus

Minnows lack barbels, have a more compressed body, and typically exhibit a more vibrant coloration, especially during breeding season. Their scales are also much smaller and often embedded.

Spined Loach

Cobitis taenia

Spined Loaches have six barbels and a distinctive erectile spine beneath each eye. Their body is more eel-like and compressed laterally, with a series of dark spots along the lateral line.
