Euthynnus alletteratus, commonly known as the Little Tunny or False Albacore, is a species of tuna in the family Scombridae. It is a fast-swimming, pelagic fish found in warm temperate and tropical waters of the Atlantic Ocean and the Mediterranean Sea. Characterized by its robust, fusiform body and distinctive dark spots and wavy lines on its back, it is a highly active predator, forming schools to hunt smaller fish and cephalopods. While not as commercially valuable as larger tuna species, it is a popular game fish due to its strong fighting capabilities.

Consigli per l'identificazione
Body Shape
Look for a robust, torpedo-shaped body, typical of fast-swimming tuna.
Coloration and Markings
Identify the dark metallic blue back with distinctive wavy, longitudinal stripes above the lateral line and 3-7 (usually 4-5) prominent dark spots between the pectoral and pelvic fins below the lateral line. These spots are a key diagnostic feature.
Pectoral Fin Length
The pectoral fins are relatively short and do not extend beyond the anterior margin of the first dorsal fin, nor do they reach the interspace between the two dorsal fins.
Scales
Note the absence of scales on most of the body, except for the well-developed corselet around the pectoral fin and along the lateral line.
Finlets
Presence of 8-9 dorsal finlets and 6-8 anal finlets following the second dorsal and anal fins, respectively.
Habitat
- Tipo di acqua
- saltwater
- Profondità
- Primarily epipelagic, inhabiting surface waters down to about 150 meters (490 feet), but can be found deeper.
- Ambiente
- Oceanic and coastal pelagic waters, often near continental shelves and islands. Prefers clear, warm waters. Forms large schools, often mixed with other small tuna species.
- Areale geografico
- Atlantic Ocean: from Nova Scotia, Canada, south to Brazil, including the Gulf of Mexico and the Caribbean Sea. Eastern Atlantic: from the British Isles south to South Africa. Also widely distributed throughout the Mediterranean Sea and the Black Sea.

- Compatibilità: Only compatible with very large, fast-swimming pelagic species in appropriately sized public aquaria. Highly predatory towards smaller fish.
- Requisiti speciali: Requires immense space for swimming, high water quality, strong filtration, and a constant supply of live or fresh frozen prey. Not recommended for private aquarists.
Informazioni in natura
- Stato di conservazione: least concern
- Stagionalità: Present year-round in tropical waters; more prevalent in temperate zones during warmer months (spring to autumn) when water temperatures are favorable for spawning and feeding.

Fatti chiave
Speed Demonbehavior
Euthynnus alletteratus is an incredibly fast swimmer, capable of bursts of speed to catch prey, thanks to its streamlined, fusiform body and lunate tail.
Schooling Behaviorbehavior
These fish often form large, active schools, sometimes mixed with other small tuna species, which aids in both hunting and defense against larger predators.
Opportunistic Predatorbehavior
Their diet is diverse, consisting mainly of small schooling fish like sardines, anchovies, and mackerel, but they will also consume squid, crustaceans, and even zooplankton.
Warm Water Affinityinteresting
Little Tunny prefer warm temperate and tropical waters, making them a common sight in the Mediterranean and the warmer parts of the Atlantic.
Game Fish Statusinteresting
Despite its smaller size compared to other tunas, the Little Tunny is highly regarded by recreational anglers for its powerful fight and speed, earning it the nickname 'bonito' in some regions.
Distinctive Markingsamazing
The unique pattern of wavy lines on its back and the characteristic dark spots below its pectoral fin are reliable identifiers, distinguishing it from similar tuna and bonito species.
Informazioni di sicurezza
Sicuro- Livello di sicurezza: safe
- Velenoso: No
- Commestibilità: edible
- Note sul maneggio: No specific handling precautions beyond standard fish handling. Be mindful of sharp fin rays and teeth when handling. Can be a strong fighter when caught, requiring appropriate gear and technique.
