Widely distributed in the Eastern Atlantic Ocean, including the Mediterranean Sea, the coast of Portugal, the Azores, Madeira, Canary Islands, and along the African coast from Senegal to South Africa. Also found in the Western Indian Ocean, including Madagascar and the Mascarene Islands, and occasionally reported from the coast of Brazil.
