Widespread in tropical and subtropical waters of the Atlantic Ocean, including the Mediterranean Sea, Caribbean Sea, Gulf of Mexico, and along the coasts of Africa and the Americas. Also found in the Indo-Pacific region, though some sources differentiate the Pacific population as Dactylopterus orientalis.
