Descrizione

Carcharhinus melanopterus, commonly known as the Blacktip Reef Shark, is a species of requiem shark, in the family Carcharhinidae, easily identified by the prominent black tips on its fins, especially the first dorsal fin and caudal fin. It is a relatively small shark, typically inhabiting shallow, inshore waters of tropical and subtropical regions. This species is viviparous, giving birth to live young after a gestation period of 7-11 months. They are active predators, primarily feeding on small bony fishes, cephalopods, and crustaceans. Their ecological role includes being a mesopredator, helping to maintain the balance of reef ecosystems. They are generally shy towards humans but can become aggressive if provoked or if food is present.

All fins, including pelvic and anal fins, typically bear distinct black tips, often with a narrow, lighter margin.

Consigli per l'identificazione

Fin Coloration

Look for the distinct black tips on all fins, especially the first dorsal fin and the lower lobe of the caudal fin. These black tips are often bordered by a narrow, lighter band.

Body Shape and Size

A relatively small, slender shark, typically reaching lengths of 1.6 meters (5.2 feet), with a maximum recorded length of about 2 meters (6.6 feet). Its snout is short and blunt.

Habitat

Often observed in very shallow, clear reef environments, sometimes with its dorsal fin exposed above the water surface.

Absence of Interdorsal Ridge

Unlike some other Carcharhinus species, the Blacktip Reef Shark lacks a ridge between its two dorsal fins.

Habitat

Tipo di acqua
saltwater
Profondità
Typically found in very shallow waters, from the intertidal zone down to about 75 meters (246 feet), but most commonly in depths less than 30 meters (98 feet).
Ambiente
Prefers warm, tropical and subtropical coastal waters, including coral reefs, lagoons, mangrove estuaries, and sandy flats. They are often seen cruising in very shallow water, with their dorsal fins breaking the surface.
Areale geografico
Widespread in the Indo-Pacific region, from the Red Sea and East Africa to Hawaii and the Tuamoto Archipelago. Its range extends north to southern Japan and south to northern Australia.

  • Requisiti speciali: Requires an extremely large, circular or oval tank to allow for continuous swimming without corners. Excellent filtration, strong water flow, and a highly specialized diet of fresh, whole fish and crustaceans are essential. Expert knowledge of shark husbandry, water quality management, and veterinary care is mandatory.

Fatti chiave

Shallow Water Specialistbehavior

Blacktip Reef Sharks are one of the most common shark species found in extremely shallow reef environments, often with their dorsal fins visible above the water.

Viviparous Reproductionbehavior

Unlike many fish that lay eggs, Blacktip Reef Sharks give birth to live young, a reproductive strategy known as viviparity.

Distinctive Markingsinteresting

Their prominent black-tipped fins are a key identification feature, making them easily distinguishable from other shark species.

Home Range Fidelitybehavior

Studies have shown that Blacktip Reef Sharks often exhibit strong fidelity to specific home ranges within reef systems, rarely venturing far from their preferred areas.

Ecological Indicatorinteresting

Due to their reliance on healthy coral reef ecosystems, the presence and abundance of Blacktip Reef Sharks can serve as an indicator of reef health.

Informazioni di sicurezza

Maneggiare con cura
  • Livello di sicurezza: caution
  • Velenoso: No
  • Commestibilità: not recommended
  • Note sul maneggio: Blacktip Reef Sharks are generally shy and wary of humans. However, they can become aggressive if provoked, cornered, or if food is present (e.g., during spearfishing or feeding activities). Bites, though rare, can occur and are typically defensive or investigatory, resulting in lacerations. Avoid attracting them with bait or shiny objects. If encountered, maintain a calm demeanor and avoid sudden movements. Do not attempt to touch or feed them. For professional handling, appropriate protective gear and expert knowledge are essential.

Specie simili

Spinner Shark

Carcharhinus brevipinna

The Spinner Shark also has black tips on its fins, but these are typically less distinct and often absent on the anal fin. It is a larger, more pelagic species with a more pointed snout and a prominent interdorsal ridge (though sometimes faint). It is known for its characteristic spinning leaps out of the water while feeding.

Blacktip Shark

Carcharhinus limbatus

Similar to the Spinner Shark, the Blacktip Shark has black tips on its fins, but these are usually more pronounced than in the Spinner Shark. It is also a larger, more robust species with a more pointed snout and a small or absent interdorsal ridge. It is more commonly found in offshore coastal waters rather than shallow reefs.

Grey Reef Shark

Carcharhinus amblyrhynchos

The Grey Reef Shark is a larger, more robust shark with a broad, rounded snout. While it may have dusky fin tips, they lack the distinct, well-defined black markings of the Blacktip Reef Shark. It also possesses an interdorsal ridge, which is absent in C. melanopterus.
