Descrizione

Amphiprion polymnus, commonly known as the Saddleback Anemonefish, is a species of marine ray-finned fish belonging to the family Pomacentridae, the clownfishes and damselfishes. It is characterized by its dark body coloration, typically dark brown to black, with two prominent white or yellowish vertical bands. The anterior band is located just behind the eye, and the posterior band, which gives the fish its common name, is saddle-shaped and extends from the dorsal fin onto the upper flank. The caudal fin is often white or yellowish. Like all anemonefish, it forms a symbiotic relationship with certain species of sea anemones, providing protection from predators and receiving food scraps, while the anemone benefits from cleaning and protection from anemone-eating fish.

Consigli per l'identificazione

Body Coloration

Look for the dark brown to black body, which distinguishes it from many other lighter-bodied clownfish species.

Band Pattern

The two white or yellowish bands are key. The saddle-shaped posterior band, extending over the back, is particularly diagnostic.

Fin Coloration

The often yellow pectoral fins and white/yellow caudal fin are good indicators, especially when combined with the body and band patterns.

Host Anemone

While not a direct physical feature of the fish, its association with specific host anemones (Heteractis crispa, Stichodactyla haddoni, Stichodactyla mertensii) can aid in identification in the wild.

Habitat

Tipo di acqua
saltwater
Profondità
1-30 meters (3-100 feet)
Ambiente
Coral reefs, lagoons, and sheltered coastal areas, always in association with host sea anemones. Prefers sandy or rubble bottoms near reefs where host anemones are abundant.
Areale geografico
Indo-West Pacific: from the Andaman Sea and Indonesia to the Philippines, New Guinea, and the Solomon Islands, north to southern Japan and south to northern Australia.

Informazioni sull'acquario

  • Livello di cura: intermediate
  • Temperamento: semi-aggressive
  • Dieta: omnivore
  • Dimensione minima della vasca: 30 gallons
  • Temperatura: 72-78°F (22-26°C)
  • Livello di pH: 8.1-8.4
  • Durezza: 8-12 dKH
  • Compatibilità: Can be kept singly, in a pair, or in a small group if introduced simultaneously into a large tank. Compatible with other peaceful to semi-aggressive reef-safe fish. Care must be taken when introducing new fish to an established pair, as they can become territorial.
  • Requisiti speciali: Requires a host anemone for optimal health and natural behavior. Suitable host anemones include Heteractis crispa (Sebae Anemone), Stichodactyla haddoni (Haddon's Carpet Anemone), and Stichodactyla mertensii (Merten's Carpet Anemone). A well-established aquarium with stable water parameters is crucial. Provide plenty of live rock for hiding places.

Fatti chiave

Protandrous Hermaphroditesbehavior

Amphiprion polymnus, like all clownfish, are protandrous hermaphrodites, meaning all individuals are born male and can later change to female. In a pair, the largest and most dominant individual becomes the female, and the second largest becomes the breeding male.

Anemone Symbiosisbehavior

This species forms an obligate symbiotic relationship with specific host anemones. The fish is immune to the anemone's stinging nematocysts due to a protective mucus layer, allowing it to live safely within the tentacles.

Territorial Defendersbehavior

Saddleback Anemonefish are known to be quite territorial, especially around their host anemone. They will aggressively defend their territory against perceived threats, including other fish and even divers.

Parental Carebehavior

Both male and female A. polymnus participate in parental care. The male typically guards and fans the eggs, which are laid at the base of the host anemone, until they hatch.

Informazioni di sicurezza

Maneggiare con cura
  • Livello di sicurezza: caution
  • Velenoso: No
  • Commestibilità: not recommended
  • Note sul maneggio: Amphiprion polymnus is not venomous. However, like all anemonefish, it can deliver a painful bite if provoked or handled carelessly, especially larger individuals. Their host anemones can sting humans, so caution should be exercised when interacting with the anemone. For aquarists, avoid direct contact with the anemone's tentacles.

Clark's Anemonefish

Amphiprion clarkii

A. clarkii typically has a more yellowish-orange body, a single white head band, and a white caudal fin. It lacks the distinct saddle-shaped posterior band of A. polymnus.

Amphiprion sebae

A. sebae has a dark body with a single white head band and a yellow caudal fin. It lacks the posterior saddle-shaped band and the overall body color can be more yellowish-brown than the darker A. polymnus.

Amphiprion perideraion

A. perideraion is pinkish-orange with a single white stripe running along its dorsal side from the snout to the caudal peduncle, and a single vertical white bar behind the eye. It lacks the two distinct vertical bands and dark body of A. polymnus.
