Descrizione

Ameiurus melas, commonly known as the Black Bullhead, is a North American freshwater catfish belonging to the family Ictaluridae. It is characterized by its dark coloration, smooth, scaleless skin, and eight barbels around its mouth. This species is highly adaptable and tolerant of poor water quality, making it a successful invasive species in many parts of the world, including Europe where it is known as 'Pesce Gatto Comune'. It is a bottom-dwelling omnivore, playing a significant role in its ecosystems as both a predator and a scavenger.

Single dorsal fin with a strong, serrated spine and 5-7 soft rays.
Pinna caudale
Caudal fin is slightly emarginate (notched) to nearly straight, not deeply forked.

Consigli per l'identificazione

Coloration

Look for the dark, often blackish or olive-brown body, which is generally darker than other bullhead species.

Barbels

Count the eight barbels around the mouth. The chin barbels are typically dark, matching the body color, which helps distinguish it from the Yellow Bullhead (Ameiurus natalis) which has white or pale chin barbels.

Caudal Fin

Observe the caudal (tail) fin. It is slightly emarginate (notched) to almost straight, not deeply forked like channel catfish or flathead catfish.

Pectoral Spines

Carefully examine the pectoral fin spines. They are sharply serrated along their posterior edge, a key distinguishing feature from some other catfish species.

Anal Fin Rays

Count the rays in the anal fin. Black Bullheads typically have 17-24 anal fin rays, which can help differentiate them from other bullhead species (e.g., Yellow Bullhead has 20-27, Brown Bullhead has 21-24).

Habitat

Tipo di acqua
freshwater
Profondità
Typically found in shallow to moderate depths, often near the bottom.
Ambiente
Prefers slow-moving or stagnant waters with soft bottoms (mud, silt, sand) and abundant vegetation. Found in ponds, lakes, reservoirs, sluggish rivers, and ditches. Highly tolerant of low oxygen levels, high turbidity, and warm water temperatures.
Areale geografico
Native to central and eastern North America. Introduced and established in many parts of Europe (including Italy, where it's known as 'Pesce Gatto Comune'), Asia, and other regions globally.

Informazioni sull'acquario

  • Livello di cura: intermediate
  • Temperamento: semi-aggressive
  • Dieta: omnivore
  • Dimensione minima della vasca: 150 gallons (for a single adult)
  • Temperatura: 10-28°C (50-82°F)
  • Livello di pH: 6.0-8.0
  • Durezza: 5-20 dGH
  • Compatibilità: Best kept in a species-specific tank or with other large, robust fish that can tolerate its semi-aggressive nature and potential for predation on smaller tank mates. Avoid keeping with small, docile fish.
  • Requisiti speciali: Requires a spacious tank with plenty of hiding spots (caves, driftwood, dense planting). A soft substrate is preferred as they are bottom-dwellers and enjoy digging. Excellent filtration is crucial due to their messy eating habits and waste production. Can be sensitive to sudden changes in water parameters.

Informazioni in natura

  • Stato di conservazione: least concern
  • Stagionalità: Spawning typically occurs in late spring to early summer when water temperatures reach 21-27°C (70-80°F). Activity levels are generally higher during warmer months.
  • Prezzo di mercato: Low to moderate, primarily for bait or local consumption in some regions.
  • Importanza commerciale: low
  • Sapore: Mild, slightly sweet, often described as earthy or muddy depending on water quality.
  • Consistenza: Flaky, firm, white meat.
  • Metodi di cottura: frying, baking, grilling, smoking
  • Valore nutrizionale: Good source of protein, omega-3 fatty acids, and vitamin D. Nutritional content can vary based on diet and environment.

Fatti chiave

Hardy Survivorbehavior

Ameiurus melas is exceptionally tolerant of poor water quality, including low oxygen levels, high turbidity, and pollution, allowing it to thrive in environments where many other fish species cannot survive.

Parental Carebehavior

Both male and female Black Bullheads participate in parental care, guarding their eggs and fry. The male typically guards the nest and young for several weeks after hatching.

Nocturnal Foragerbehavior

While they can be active during the day, Black Bullheads are primarily nocturnal, using their highly sensitive barbels to locate food in murky waters and at night.

Invasive Successinteresting

Due to their adaptability and reproductive success, Black Bullheads have become a significant invasive species in many non-native regions, often outcompeting native fish for resources and altering aquatic ecosystems.

Sensory Barbelsamazing

The eight barbels around the mouth of the Black Bullhead are covered in taste buds, allowing the fish to 'taste' its surroundings and locate food in dark or turbid conditions.

Informazioni di sicurezza

Maneggiare con cura
  • Livello di sicurezza: caution
  • Velenoso: Sì
  • Commestibilità: edible
  • Note sul maneggio: Black Bullheads possess sharp, serrated spines on their dorsal and pectoral fins. These spines can inflict painful punctures. The mucus coating these spines contains a mild venom that can cause swelling, redness, and intense pain, similar to a bee sting. When handling, use thick gloves or a fish gripper, and avoid direct contact with the spines. If stung, clean the wound thoroughly and apply heat (e.g., hot water soak) to denature the protein-based venom, which can help alleviate pain. Seek medical attention if symptoms are severe or persist.

Specie simili

Brown Bullhead

Ameiurus nebulosus

Brown Bullheads typically have mottled brown sides, and their chin barbels are usually dusky or brownish, not uniformly dark black. The caudal fin is more deeply emarginate than that of the Black Bullhead. Pectoral spines have weaker serrations.

Yellow Bullhead

Ameiurus natalis

Yellow Bullheads are generally yellowish to olive-brown, and most distinctly, their chin barbels are white or pale yellow. Their caudal fin is rounded, not emarginate. They also tend to have a longer anal fin with more rays (20-27).

Channel Catfish

Ictalurus punctatus

Channel Catfish have a deeply forked caudal fin, which is the most obvious distinguishing feature. They also typically have scattered dark spots on their sides (especially juveniles) and a more slender body profile. Their barbels are generally shorter and less prominent.
