Alectis ciliaris, commonly known as the African Threadfin or African Pompano, is a species of large marine fish in the jack family, Carangidae. It is characterized by its highly compressed, deep body and, most notably in juveniles, extremely elongated filamentous rays in the dorsal and anal fins. These filaments can be several times the length of the body in young individuals, gradually shortening with age. Adults develop a more streamlined, rhomboidal shape. This species is highly prized by anglers and is considered an excellent food fish.
Caratteristiche fisiche
- Forma del corpo
- compressed
- Colorazione
- Silvery-white to silvery-blue on the flanks, fading to white on the belly. Juveniles may have faint vertical bars or blotches. Fins are typically dusky or yellowish.
- Tipo di squame
- cycloid
- Posizione della bocca
- terminal
- Caratteristiche distintive
- Extremely elongated, filamentous dorsal and anal fin rays in juveniles (up to 8 times body length), Highly compressed, deep, rhomboidal body shape, especially in juveniles, Steeply rising head profile, Small, embedded scales, giving a smooth appearance, Absence of scutes on the lateral line (unlike many other Carangids)
- Pinna dorsale
- Two dorsal fins; the first with 7-8 short, embedded spines (often disappearing with age), the second with 1 spine and 18-20 soft rays. The anterior soft rays are greatly elongated in juveniles.
- Pinna caudale
- Deeply forked caudal fin.
- Pinna pettorale
- Long, falcate (sickle-shaped) pectoral fins.
- Pinne distintive
- Anal fin with 2 detached spines followed by 1 spine and 15-17 soft rays. Anterior soft rays are greatly elongated in juveniles, mirroring the dorsal fin.
Consigli per l'identificazione
Juvenile Fin Filaments
The most striking feature of juveniles is the presence of extremely long, trailing filaments from the dorsal and anal fins. These are unmistakable.
Body Shape
The highly compressed, deep, and almost disc-like body shape, especially in younger individuals, is a key identifier.
Absence of Scutes
Unlike many other members of the Carangidae family, Alectis ciliaris lacks prominent scutes (hard, bony plates) along the lateral line, which feels smooth to the touch.
Head Profile
The steeply rising, almost vertical head profile is characteristic, particularly in adults.
Habitat
- Tipo di acqua
- saltwater
- Profondità
- Typically found from the surface down to about 100 meters (330 feet), though juveniles are often pelagic in shallower coastal waters.
- Ambiente
- Coastal waters, estuaries, coral reefs, rocky reefs, and open pelagic zones. Juveniles are often found in shallow, protected bays and estuaries, sometimes near floating debris or sargassum. Adults move to deeper offshore waters.
- Areale geografico
- Circumtropical and subtropical. Found in the Atlantic Ocean (from Massachusetts, USA, to Brazil, including the Gulf of Mexico and Caribbean Sea; also off West Africa), Indian Ocean (East Africa to Australia), and Pacific Ocean (Japan to Australia, and across to the Americas).

- Temperatura: 24-28°C (75-82°F)
- Livello di pH: 8.1-8.4
- Durezza: 8-12 dKH
- Compatibilità: Best kept in a species-specific tank or with very large, robust tankmates that can withstand its active nature and potential for aggression, especially towards smaller fish. Not suitable for reef tanks due to predatory nature.
- Requisiti speciali: Requires an extremely large aquarium with strong filtration and excellent water quality. Juveniles are often sold, but their rapid growth and eventual size make them unsuitable for most home aquariums. A very high protein diet is essential. Prone to stress in inadequate environments.

Fatti chiave
Juvenile Disguisebehavior
The incredibly long, filamentous fin rays of juvenile Alectis ciliaris are thought to mimic jellyfish tentacles, providing camouflage and protection from predators.
Rapid Growthinteresting
Alectis ciliaris exhibits remarkably fast growth, especially in its juvenile stage, quickly outgrowing most aquarium setups.
Sport Fish Appealinteresting
Due to its fighting prowess and delicious flesh, the African Threadfin is a highly sought-after game fish for recreational anglers worldwide.
Global Wandereramazing
This species has one of the widest distributions of any marine fish, inhabiting tropical and subtropical waters across three major oceans.
Informazioni di sicurezza
Sicuro- Livello di sicurezza: safe
- Velenoso: No
- Commestibilità: edible
- Note sul maneggio: No specific handling precautions beyond standard fish handling. Be mindful of sharp fin rays, especially the dorsal and anal spines, which can cause minor punctures. Larger specimens can be powerful and may thrash when caught.

Indian Threadfin
Alectis indicus
A. indicus generally has a less deep body profile as an adult, and its fin filaments, while present in juveniles, are typically shorter than those of A. ciliaris. The head profile of A. indicus is also less steeply sloped.
African Pompano (juvenile)
Alectis ciliaris
It is important to note that the common name 'African Pompano' is often used for Alectis ciliaris itself. However, other species within the Carangidae family, particularly those in the genus Trachinotus (true pompanos), can be confused. True pompanos lack the extremely elongated fin filaments of Alectis juveniles and generally have a more oval body shape.
Lookdown
Selene vomer
While also having a highly compressed body and a steep head profile, the Lookdown (Selene vomer) has a much more exaggerated, almost vertical forehead and lacks the extremely long fin filaments of Alectis ciliaris juveniles. Its body is also typically more silvery and reflective.
