Descrizione

The Atlantic Sturgeon (Acipenser oxyrinchus) is a large, anadromous fish belonging to the family Acipenseridae. It is characterized by its ancient, cartilaginous skeleton, five rows of bony scutes along its body, and a heterocercal tail. This species is known for its long lifespan and slow maturation, making it particularly vulnerable to overfishing and habitat degradation. It spends most of its life in saltwater but migrates to freshwater rivers to spawn.

Caratteristiche fisiche

Forma del corpo
elongated
Colorazione
Dorsal surface typically olive-brown to bluish-black, fading to lighter sides and a white or yellowish belly. Scutes are often lighter in color.
Tipo di squame
none
Posizione della bocca
inferior
Caratteristiche distintive
Five rows of bony scutes: one dorsal, two lateral, and two ventral. The dorsal scutes are typically 9-16, lateral 24-35, and ventral 8-12., Four barbels located in a transverse row closer to the tip of the snout than to the mouth., Long, pointed snout (oxy-rhynchus means 'sharp snout')., Heterocercal tail (upper lobe longer than lower lobe)., Ventral mouth, protractile and toothless in adults.
Pinna dorsale
Single, located far back on the body, with 30-47 rays.
Pinna caudale
Heterocercal, deeply forked, with the upper lobe significantly longer than the lower.
Pinna pettorale
Large and triangular, located just behind the operculum.
Pinne distintive
Pelvic fins are abdominal, located far back on the body, anterior to the dorsal fin.

Consigli per l'identificazione

Snout Shape

The Atlantic Sturgeon has a relatively long, pointed snout, especially in younger individuals. This distinguishes it from the shorter, blunter snout of the Shortnose Sturgeon (Acipenser brevirostrum).

Barbel Position

Its four barbels are located closer to the tip of the snout than to the mouth, arranged in a transverse row. This is a key differentiator from other sturgeon species where barbels might be closer to the mouth or in a different arrangement.

Scute Count

Counting the number of dorsal (9-16), lateral (24-35), and ventral (8-12) scutes can help distinguish it from other sturgeon species, although there can be some overlap.

Size

Atlantic Sturgeons are among the largest sturgeon species, regularly reaching lengths of 2-4 meters (6.5-13 feet) and weights of over 200 kg (440 lbs). This large size helps differentiate adults from smaller sturgeon species.

Habitat

Tipo di acqua
brackish
Profondità
Typically found in coastal waters from shallow estuaries to depths of over 50 meters in the ocean. Spawning occurs in freshwater rivers at depths of 2-20 meters.
Ambiente
Anadromous, inhabiting coastal marine waters, estuaries, and large freshwater rivers. Prefers areas with sandy or gravelly bottoms for feeding and spawning. Requires clean, well-oxygenated water.
Areale geografico
Historically ranged along the Atlantic coast of North America from Labrador, Canada, to the St. Johns River, Florida, USA. Also found in the Gulf of Mexico along the Florida panhandle. Populations are now severely fragmented and reduced.

Informazioni sull'acquario

  • Livello di cura: expert
  • Temperamento: peaceful
  • Dieta: carnivore
  • Dimensione minima della vasca: Not suitable for home aquaria due to immense size and specific environmental needs. Requires specialized public aquaria with vast, custom-built systems.
  • Temperatura: 10-20°C (50-68°F)
  • Livello di pH: 7.0-8.0
  • Durezza: Moderate to hard (10-20 dGH)
  • Compatibilità: Generally compatible with other large, peaceful fish that can tolerate similar water conditions, but its size makes cohabitation challenging in captive environments.
  • Requisiti speciali: Requires extremely large, well-filtered, and oxygenated tanks with strong currents to simulate natural riverine and estuarine conditions. Substrate should be soft to prevent injury to barbels. Not recommended for private aquarists.

Informazioni in natura

  • Stato di conservazione: endangered
  • Stagionalità: Spawning migrations occur in spring (April-June) and sometimes fall (September-October) in freshwater rivers. Adults spend the rest of the year in coastal marine waters.
  • Prezzo di mercato: Historically very high, primarily for caviar and meat. Current commercial fishing is largely prohibited due to conservation status, making legal market prices negligible or non-existent for wild-caught specimens.
  • Importanza commerciale: none
  • Sapore: Mild, rich, and firm, often compared to swordfish or veal.
  • Consistenza: Firm, flaky, and meaty.
  • Metodi di cottura: Grilled, Smoked, Baked, Steamed
  • Valore nutrizionale: High in protein, omega-3 fatty acids, and various vitamins and minerals. Historically prized for its roe (caviar).

Fatti chiave

Ancient Lineageevolution

Atlantic Sturgeons are often referred to as 'living fossils' because their morphology has changed little over the past 100 million years, making them one of the oldest fish families on Earth.

Long-Distance Migratorsbehavior

These fish undertake extensive migrations, traveling hundreds of kilometers from their ocean feeding grounds to freshwater rivers to spawn, often returning to their natal rivers.

Slow Growth, Long Lifebehavior

Atlantic Sturgeons are slow-growing and long-lived, with individuals known to live for over 60 years. Females typically don't reach sexual maturity until 10-20 years of age, and males 8-12 years.

Caviar Kinginteresting

Historically, the Atlantic Sturgeon was a primary source of high-quality caviar in North America, leading to severe overfishing in the 19th and 20th centuries.

Bottom Feedersbehavior

They are primarily benthic feeders, using their sensitive barbels to locate prey (invertebrates, small fish) on the river and ocean floor, which they then suck up with their protractile mouths.

Informazioni di sicurezza

Maneggiare con cura
  • Livello di sicurezza: caution
  • Velenoso: No
  • Commestibilità: not recommended
  • Note sul maneggio: Atlantic Sturgeons are large and powerful fish. While not venomous, their size and strength can pose a risk to handlers. Their bony scutes can be sharp, and care should be taken to avoid cuts. Always handle with respect and minimize stress, especially during catch-and-release, due to their endangered status. Use appropriate gear and techniques to ensure the safety of both the fish and the handler.

Specie simili

Shortnose Sturgeon

Acipenser brevirostrum

The Shortnose Sturgeon is generally smaller (up to 1.4 meters), has a noticeably shorter and blunter snout, and its barbels are typically closer to the mouth than to the snout tip. Its scutes are also more numerous and less prominent.

Gulf Sturgeon

Acipenser oxyrinchus desotoi

The Gulf Sturgeon is a subspecies of the Atlantic Sturgeon, found in the Gulf of Mexico. It is morphologically very similar but generally has a more slender body, a longer and more pointed snout, and often fewer lateral scutes (23-30) compared to the Atlantic Sturgeon (24-35). Genetic analysis is often required for definitive differentiation.

European Sturgeon

Acipenser sturio

Historically, the European Sturgeon was considered the same species as the Atlantic Sturgeon (A. oxyrinchus). However, genetic and morphological studies have confirmed them as distinct species. A. sturio generally has a shorter, blunter snout than A. oxyrinchus, and its barbels are typically closer to the mouth. Its geographic range is also restricted to European waters.
