Highly variable due to sexual dimorphism and dichromatism. Initial Phase (IP) individuals (females and juvenile males) typically have a brownish or greenish back, a white belly, and a prominent dark lateral stripe often bordered by a lighter stripe. Terminal Phase (TP) males are much more colorful, displaying a vibrant green or blue back, a bright orange or red zigzag stripe along the flank, and a white belly. They also have a distinctive blue spot on the operculum and often blue and red markings on the fins.
