Environment

Prefers rocky shores, kelp forests, seagrass beds, and areas with abundant algal growth, providing shelter and foraging opportunities. Can also be found on sandy or muddy bottoms near cover. Tolerant of brackish conditions in estuaries.

Geographic range

Widespread in the North Atlantic Ocean, from the White Sea and Barents Sea south to the English Channel, including the Baltic Sea, North Sea, and coasts of Scandinavia, Iceland, and Greenland. Also found along the eastern coast of North America from Labrador to New Jersey.
