Primarily pelagic, found from the surface down to depths of 550 meters (1,800 feet), and occasionally deeper, to over 2,000 meters (6,500 feet). They often ascend to surface waters at night to feed.

Environment

Open ocean (epipelagic and mesopelagic zones) in tropical, subtropical, and temperate waters. They prefer waters with temperatures between 18-22°C (64-72°F) but can tolerate a wider range due to their thermoregulatory capabilities.

Geographic range

Cosmopolitan distribution in the Atlantic, Pacific, and Indian Oceans. Found globally between approximately 50°N and 50°S latitude. Absent from polar regions and the Black Sea.
