Typically found in shallow coastal waters from 10 to 100 meters, but can occur down to 450 meters. Prefers soft substrates.

Environment

Benthic, inhabiting sandy or muddy bottoms, often near seagrass beds or rocky outcrops. Buries itself almost completely, leaving only its eyes and mouth exposed.

Geographic range

Eastern Atlantic Ocean, from Portugal to Senegal, including the Canary Islands. Also found throughout the Mediterranean Sea and the Black Sea.
