Geographic range

Native to central and eastern North America. Its range extends from the St. Lawrence River and Great Lakes basin south to the Ohio River basin, and west to the Red River of the North basin in Manitoba, Minnesota, and North Dakota. It is found throughout much of the Mississippi River basin.
