Environment

Prefers sandy bottoms, seagrass beds, and rocky reefs in clear, warm temperate to tropical waters. Often found in estuaries and near river mouths, especially juveniles. Forms schools, sometimes large ones.

Geographic range

Eastern Atlantic Ocean, from Portugal south to Angola, including the Canary Islands and Cape Verde. Also widely distributed throughout the Mediterranean Sea and the Black Sea.
