Typically found in shallow to moderately deep sections of rivers and lakes, usually less than 5 meters (16 feet).

Environment

Prefers clear, cold, well-oxygenated rivers and streams with gravel or stony bottoms, often with moderate to fast currents. Also found in some cold, oligotrophic lakes. Requires clean water for spawning and feeding. Often found in the 'grayling zone' of rivers, characterized by faster flows and lower temperatures than downstream 'barbel zones'.

Geographic range

Widespread across northern Eurasia, from Great Britain and Scandinavia eastward through Russia to the Ural Mountains. Its range extends south to parts of France, Germany, and the Danube basin. Absent from Ireland and most of the Iberian Peninsula and Italy.
