Environment

Prefers rocky bottoms, kelp beds, mussel beds, oyster reefs, jetties, pilings, and other structured habitats that provide shelter and foraging opportunities. Often found in areas with strong currents.

Geographic range

Western North Atlantic Ocean, from Newfoundland and Labrador, Canada, south to Chesapeake Bay, USA. Most abundant from the Gulf of St. Lawrence to New Jersey.
