Environment

Prefers sheltered areas with abundant vegetation, such as seagrass beds (e.g., Zostera, Posidonia), macroalgae (e.g., Fucus, Laminaria), and rocky reefs with algal growth. Also found over sandy or muddy bottoms with detritus, where they can blend in.

Geographic range

Widespread in the Northeast Atlantic Ocean, including the coasts of Europe from Norway to the Mediterranean Sea, Black Sea, and extending south to the Canary Islands and parts of West Africa. Also found in the Baltic Sea.
