Environment

Prefers blackwater and clearwater tributaries, oxbow lakes, and flooded forests (igapós) of the Amazon basin. These environments are characterized by soft, acidic water, dense submerged vegetation, and abundant driftwood and leaf litter, which provide shelter and foraging grounds.

Geographic range

Native to the central Amazon River basin, primarily in Brazil. Its distribution is largely restricted to the Rio Negro and its tributaries, as well as some areas of the Rio Trombetas and Rio Abacaxis.
