Demersal, inhabiting rocky reefs, seagrass beds (Posidonia oceanica), sandy bottoms, and muddy areas, often near structures or areas with cover. Juveniles are frequently found in shallower, more sheltered waters.

Geographic range

Eastern Atlantic Ocean, from the British Isles south to Namibia, including the Canary Islands, Madeira, and the Azores. Also widely distributed throughout the Mediterranean Sea and the Black Sea.
