Environment

Inhabits coral reefs, rocky reefs, seagrass beds, and sandy bottoms, often near drop-offs or areas with strong currents. Juveniles frequently form schools in sheltered bays and estuaries, while adults are more solitary or found in small groups around reef structures.

Geographic range

Indo-Pacific region, from the Red Sea and East Africa across to the central Pacific, including Hawaii, and north to southern Japan, south to Australia. Also found in the eastern Mediterranean, having migrated through the Suez Canal (Lessepsian migrant).
