Geographic range

Cosmopolitan in tropical and temperate waters of the Atlantic, Indian, and Pacific Oceans. In the Atlantic, it ranges from Nova Scotia to Argentina, including the Gulf of Mexico and Caribbean Sea, and from the Mediterranean Sea to South Africa. In the Indo-Pacific, it is found from East Africa to Japan, Australia, and New Zealand, and across to the Eastern Pacific from California to Chile.
