Estuaries, bays, sounds, and nearshore ocean waters. Prefers soft bottoms (sand, mud, shell hash) where it can burrow, but also found over seagrass beds and rocky areas.

Geographic range

Western Atlantic Ocean, from Florida (USA) north to Nova Scotia (Canada), with its greatest abundance from Chesapeake Bay to Cape Cod.
