Environment

Prefers sandy and muddy bottoms in estuaries, coastal bays, protected beaches, and surf zones. Often found near seagrass beds and mangrove areas, especially as juveniles.

Geographic range

Endemic to the Indo-Pacific region, primarily along the eastern coast of Australia, from northern Queensland south to Victoria, and extending to Lord Howe Island. Also found in New Caledonia.
