Environment

Prefers sandy or silty bottoms, seagrass beds (especially as juveniles), and sheltered bays and estuaries. Adults often move to deeper offshore reefs and sand patches, while juveniles are commonly found in shallower, protected areas.

Geographic range

Endemic to southern Australia, ranging from Jurien Bay in Western Australia, across South Australia, Victoria, and Tasmania, to the Gippsland Lakes in eastern Victoria. Its distribution does not extend into New South Wales.
