Inhabits rocky reefs, seagrass beds, coral reefs, and sandy-muddy bottoms. Juveniles often form large schools in seagrass beds, while adults are more solitary or found in smaller groups.
Geographic range
Indo-Pacific region, including the Red Sea, East Africa, Persian Gulf, and extending eastward to the Western Pacific, including parts of Australia and Japan. It has also become an invasive species in the Mediterranean Sea via the Suez Canal (Lessepsian migration).
